Re: Ivy in London

I would be very happy to write to anybody with a real interest in IL at particknahman@hotmail.com. The forum is not for me. Alex has written more than anybody else so far.

Paddy.

Re: Ivy in London

Great stuff, Alex.

Reading and re-reading your essay over the New Year cheered me up at a time I always find quite depressing for some reason.

There is one thing I would like to ask and that is about the timeline covered by your piece.  Obviously you start by making reference to the very early 60s and towards the end you appear to be referring to the late 60s - especially in the penultimate para.  Is that interpretation correct?

Re: Ivy in London

The way I see it, Alex' addendum post on page 3 opens up a huge perspective. I've tried to sketch its outlines before.

Alex Roest points out how during the Preppy years,  brands like Ralph Lauren and Gant were obviously standing on the shoulders of the historic Ivy style. Now zoom out of London circa 1980 and look around you in 2010. Ralphy and Gant are still doing that same old trick, probably more successfully than ever. And they are not the only ones. Could they have done this without the foundations lain by the "Boom Years" in America circa 1960?

This forum here might appear to be dealing with an obscure, largely obsolete way of dress, but I think we're the eye of the storm really.

I can see that big unwritten book about how post war America left a huge mark on the way the western world dressed way into the 21st century. And it shouldn't be a fashion book, but a cultural history.

Someone go and write that, I should be polishing my Florsheims now.

Re: Ivy in London

A very belated congratulations on the essay, Alex. Excellent work and a great read. Spent most of the Christmas period under a duvet in a cyberspace free zone so only now re-connecting with the outside world and catching up on things! And those photos of Alistair F? Bloody superb!

Re: Ivy in London

I just stumbled across this archive of pictures from the last 5 or 6 decades. Not Ivy per se, but envertheless an interesting look into London fashion back in the days... http://www.flickr.com/photos/lselibrary/collections/72157621932553336/
