Last time I was in Kilburn drinking was over a year ago in the pub next to The Luminaire, which was fine.

The National was another Kilburn Irish music venue. It became a black pentecostal church.

Re: levis 501/505 needle cords

Always been a big fan of the above-mentioned 519's....used to pair them with a hanes sweatshirt and cheap sears sneakers circa 79-81, started buying them again at thrifts in the early 90's. It's a great cut, the 70's ones particularly are just slightly slimmer than the 80's, making all the difference. Even better are the 60's slim fits, usually 518. I believe this is what you see worn in some take ivy snaps, and are basically (i think) the same cut as the 'white' levi's worn by the beach boys etc and mentioned in Bob Greene's 'Be true to your school' book (great diary of high school life in the early 60's). And a dark horse contender---Maverick Lean Fits. Great slim but not tight cut.

I tried several sizes of 514's on at Ross and found them low-waisted and boxy.

Re: levis 501/505 needle cords

Thanks for the info on the Japanese 519's Klook, look interesting...i think i used to have a khaki twill. Have a couple pairs of vintage denim 519 and they're a nice straight fit. I'm always curious as to how authentic a recreation these japanese reissues are, it looks like the 519 may be more low-rise than the real deal.

If you dig the Greene book (or even if you don't) check out Chris Miller's "The Real Animal House" for a more depraved view of the same time (maybe a couple years earlier). The biography of Doug Kenney, Harvard grad/natl lampoon writer is also a great read and has a cool photo section w/Kenney and the Brooks-suited Henry Beard.

Re: levis 501/505 needle cords

urbanoutfitters is now offering levi 511 cords. i just did a comparison measurement of a pair of levi 511 twills and a vintage pair of levi big e slim fit 518 cords.
518 i got as deadstock 32x29 , have been washed about 10 times. they measure waist 32", inseam 28", rise 11", zipper 6", seat 19", thigh 10.5", knee 8.5", hem 7".
511 were tag size 33x30, and measure waist 34", inseam 31", rise 9", zipper 5", seat 20", thigh 10.5", knee 8.5", hem 7.5".
still not a fan of the low rise but overall a pretty good cut.

Re: levis 501/505 needle cords

I have a pair of those. The thigh measurement is okay but the super low rise makes them seem tighter then they are through the whole top block. They are okay but still not ideal.

Re: levis 501/505 needle cords

looked at those but the ultra-tapered leg isnt my thing. if they did the 514 in cord theyd probably clean up. urban "bdg" ones were ok, and cost 10 bucks, but the quality looked suspect.

Re: levis 501/505 needle cords

I have just received my MTM chinos from Alexander's. It was a bit of leap of faith since their website doesn't really give an idea of the detail of any of their products, so I was rather relieved that there are no unwanted elements, with the only branding being Alexander's of London discreetly embossed on the buttons.

Unless you go for the more expensive cloning option, you have to take your own measurements when you order. This can be tricky to get right, but the fit is pretty much spot-on. There are a couple of things I'll change next time but these are my own fault, and overall I'd judge the experiment a success.

Re: levis 501/505 needle cords

they look pretty good Klook - things like the depth of the rear pocket cuffs.

look like nice colour too (I can see they are khaki really)

Re: levis 501/505 needle cords

Two things I was wondering if Weejun wouldn't mind letting us know which wale of cord he went for as I'm terribly ignorant about this kind of thing. And secondly I wondered if Klook would let us know if after having the trousers for a few months that he had made whether he was still pleased with them. Thanks alot

Re: levis 501/505 needle cords

Hi Sunra, I went for the higher number wale (14 is it?) which is your standardish needlecord as opposed to the 8 or so which is what used to be called jumbo cord back in the 80s.

Also interested to hear from Mr Klook how he's getting on with his trews from AoL. Am wearing my tan ones today. Really nice. Still don't know why the chocolate brown ones were thinner material and floppy looking. These and the dark navy are sturdy.

Re: levis 501/505 needle cords

Mine were chinos not cords, so it's a slightly different proposition.

Broadly speaking, I'm happy with them. I ordered them too short, but that's no one's fault but my own. The one thing that slightly bothers me is that the waist has elasticated adjusters of some kind, there is probably a technical term for this but I don't know it. As someone with a distinct lack of flesh on the bones, this comfort element is slightly annoying.

Despite this, with revised measurements, I will probably get another pair - and come the summer, I'll try a pair of cords too.

Re: levis 501/505 needle cords

Thanks a lot Weejun and Klook. I'm definitely going to order some cords in the next few days and am also contemplating getting a pair of replica chinos made of some old favourites.
