McGregor Mania

Spurred on partly by recent posts on the forum, and by finding a McGregor Donkey Coat size 40 in a local thrift....only to find that it was way too short-armed.

About a year ago I found a McGregor Brolly Parka. "tapered like a British Umbrella". One of my favorite coats. According to these 2 links, it would seem to be from 1965-66

Waiting for this coat:

What's the longest you've ever waited for a package from the US? It's been on its way for 4 weeks now, and I'm beginning to worry.

Re: McGregor Mania

Six weeks, Eris, plus they've had mega snow in some parts there plus the airports closed here, so I wouldn't worry.

That's a great jacket, and the same as 1966 was sporting the other day if I'm not mistaken?

Just over 4 weeks. And out of dozens of deliveries from the US since 2001, none have ever gone AWOL.

Re: McGregor Mania

reminds me that I once had that same jacket in loden green moleskin with a cream fake fur pile lining. Bought from good old FLIP, wasn't in good nick like that one though...

Oh regarding your question: It's a Ram Jet - not sure what 1966 was sporting to be honest!

Re: McGregor Mania

Seems to be a different model! Nicer (funnier?) label on 66s, but mine has a throat latch - ha, take that!

Re: McGregor Mania

think his does too, it's just out of shot buttoned back - am I right '66?

have to be on the look out for one of these myself although although as much as I like the colour it makes The Weejun look sickly ill unfortunately!

In the mid 80s, it was THE go-to place to buy clothes. More Americana and Rockabilly than Ivy though.

Lots of junk too, they were obviously importing used clothes by the container-load. They had huge shops in city-centre locations and very narrow aisles packed with stuff.

Re: McGregor Mania

Different jackets, similar collars.

Eris' is "car coat" length and very similar to the the Lakeland "Clicker coats", mine is a short bomberesque jacket. The colour, somewhere between mustard and custard, is not the most flattering on me either but we get along.

I have a bunch pictures of McGregor sew in labels I will post later. Their marketing department was a pretty creative place by the looks of it.

Re: McGregor Mania

The FLIP model was very simple and very smart. Across the USA there were clothes banks for people to dispose of their old clothing (like we now have in UK in car parks etc) and door to door collections by various groups.

These clothes were destined to be pulped and made into rag and as such were available to buy BY THE BALE! at a standard price per bale/weight.

The guys who owned FLIP would have someone in the US purchasing huge numbers of BALES, seiving through the clothes inside and pulling out all the items on a list - button downs, jeans, cords, leather jackets, etc. Anything in good condition or just vintage would be then industrially dry cleaned or washed and packed up to ship to London.

The rest of the crap would then be re-baled and sold back to the market for rag scrap.

The profit from buying 3 bales and getting one bales' worth of good vintage stuff was enormous back then, and of course in those days a mostly cash business.

ah, didn't realise yours was a bomber having seen the car coat version before i assumed it was that. I'll have to keep an eye out for a bomber...

Re: McGregor Mania

Great stuff - what is that thing on the collar of the coat that looks like a bicycle pump hose?

Re: McGregor Mania

Wear your McGregor on a MacGregor?

http://www.macgregor26.com/

Much like those jackets you gents have posted, this boat is probably fun to play around with, but you wouldn't want to be seen by anybody you know.

^ Fantastic stuff!

(I've just picked up a vintage 'Comar' Tweed overcoat: Raglan shoulders, Polo coat style cuffed sleeves, 3 button, heavy, heavy Tweed, Two way pockets, one with internal coin pocket, Butterfly silk lining with blanket check wool lining for the rest.

Only one small label: Quality COMAR clothes.

Anybody know anything?  I'll go Google after I've done the school run.

I'm guessing English, early 60's?

It's for blowing air into the inflatable jacket. So you can float halfway the Atlantic in style.
