Today's shoe of choice, bought from JS in (when?) '86? £49?
... OK. The first thing to be said is that they aren't a 'Trad' iGent's shoe - Handsewn in Freeport, Maine, but with a 'composition' sole and a slightly rustic edge.
Yet they have GREAT Ivy charm...
So let me slip one off & measure it up for you... Mine are a US 10 D...
Here goes -
Well, I love the toe box for starters: A nice, deep, roughly 1.25" high, not counting the sole, with that proper American 'pie crust' lock-stich finish. No faux Anglo-style LHS stitching here.
And at the back, above the 1" heel, the shoe rises to about 2.75".
They're unlined with a high-ish vamp (is that the word?) and a quite unique (in my experirnce) shape to the 'saddle'.
The Beefroll is just there. No big deal, no 'statement' like on the Bass Beefroll where it is often too big for the shoe.
They are Sebago Classic-esque over all, and also a bit like the old Sebago for Brooks Pennies too, despite being Beefrolls.
They have the 'kicker ridge' at the back, and, even after 24 years, smell just like JS used to smell: Clean, Warm, Leathery.
Very nice, everyday snub-toed loafers.
Things you can live in.

^ Dear me, typos-a-go-go.
Don't remotely matter though, does it?
I'd love a pic Jim. It'll induce Proustian longing. Oh Covent Garden in 1987. So low-key, sweet and innocent, a bit like I was. Now it's dominated by conglomerates and anonymous chains. Could be Coventry plus a million Poles and Spaniards in cheap Chinese casuals. Eastland were wonderful, as were American Gentleman and Walk Over. I miss them dreadfully. I will miss J.Simons more than I can imagine.
An acquaintance of mine turned up at a social gathering recently wearing a pair of American Gentleman shell cordovan plaintoes bought at Simons in, I'm guessing, the early 80s. Really nice.
Does anyone know anything about the brand?
I'll need to dig it out, but The Weejun posted a magazine article on loafers from the 80's on here a while back which had pics of both the Eastland and the Buffalo Creek Trader along will all the usual suspects (Weejuns & Sebbys)... Ring any bells with anyone? I think it was from 'Arena'.
AE Kennys on today - I'm trying to wear all my loafers in rotation just to give them all an airing.

Got mine in Krantz.

Krantz get forgotten a bit I think, but in the 60's Ian Strachan shopped there as well as Austins. Will Krantz end up as being our last link with that world?

looking forward to this one...
And there's a pic of them in that article from Arena I bumped the other day.
I'll pull mine out for tomorrow & see what I can find to say about them. If I compare them to an old Weejun that might be useful as a benchmark.
Best,
ah, they're plain strap penny loafers, no Beefrolls...
There are much more Loafers that are quite like the classic Sebagos compared to loafers that are like plain strap Weejuns... My Florsheim pennys for example are very close to the Sabagos...
I'm curious...
