Re: You In 1981.

My older mentors, Pad & Jim, still wear Ivy. Levi does too, over in Paris. Others have come and gone. S'pose it all depends on how into it all you are. My old chum Greyhound always mixed & matched his Ivy with whatever else caught his eye in that Moddy way of his. Come to think of it, most people I've known did that too. Ivy was just a shirt, a pair of loafers & a zipper jacket.

Re: You In 1981.

Graham from Kingston Upon Thames, Beverly Boys School and all that, was a quarter of the original Russell Street and falling out with him over Russell still makes me sad.

Anything I know about Mod came from him.

Like me, he used to shoplift in Bentalls for Paddy and we were once so close that we'd wear each others clothes & kip on each other's sofas.

Greyhound, if you read this, won't you please come home?

Re: You In 1981.

I was 10 and mostly wearing an older cousin's hand-me-downs.

I remember a lot of velour (shudder).

Prepped out at age 14 or so, not coincidentally after I started going to a prep school (a day school in central Kansas, nothin' fancy).

But I had always loved clothes, paid a lot of attention to old movies and TV shows and loved the way people looked in them.  I was one of those weird little kids who looked forward to wearing a jacket and tie on special occasions.

Midwestern preppy throughout the 80s:  lots of LL Bean and Lands' End.  Jeans and chinos, camp mocs and pennies, OCBDs and crewneck sweaters, the usual.  Polo shirts and khaki shorts in the summer.  Also rugby shirts, down vests, duck boots, ghurka shorts, old school Banana republic T shirts (with the safari theme), docksiders, etc.

School did have the chinos/white or blue BD shirt/blue blazer uniform.  The preppiest dandies affected bow ties, gold wire rim round John Lennon glasses, and, in a perhaps regional quirk (as I've never seen this in general practice anywhere else), supenders with khakis, particularly the braided leather type.  Only the social elite at school decked themselves out thus, and, in retrospect, their look was kinda "Trad."

Re: You In 1981.

There's something occult about that chap's good looks in that case then. A portrait in the attic, a deal struck at midnight on some blasted heath under a full moon - There's some story there that he's not telling us...

( wink )

Dungeons and Dragons, Dungeons and Dragons, strange thoughts about Kim Wilde and then suddenly there was the Human League.

Re: You In 1981.

if this threads about all of the 80s, my main memory involving "ivy" is of the LL. Bean catalogue. once i came across my grandma's copy at 9 or so, i subscribed to every perambulation of it, though i have to this day never hunted upland (or lowland) fowl, fished with a fly reel, or been backpacking anywhere wilder than the zurich train station. it was a window to a new world, a world where the coked up next door neighbor didnt scream about "fucking shit everywhere" a 4 in the morning. unlike our own neighborhood, freeport didnt seem to have any little sicilians with knives. it was a world without zubazz pants, z cavaricci, Sinbad, marithe and/or francois girbaud, or Surgical appliance/ british nights/L.A. Gear sneakers that looked like gigantic infants' booties.  it was a world without House Music and Death Metal. i wanted to move there, to freeport, ME.,  and spend the rest of my days flyfishing with the various elderly maine residents and lithe, blond women in authentic scottish cardigans.

Re: You In 1981.

Actually...

These have my attention:  http://www.mensmetals.com/products/titanium-crystal-cufflinks

I take back my silly question about your cufflinks.

Might there be a discount if one was to buy the matching tie clip and money clip along with the cufflinks?

Also, is there any chance of a matching lapel pin? Obviously I would expect to pay more for any items which you had to make especially for me.

Thanks for your help.

Re: You In 1981.

Just a thought from left field - Many men are 'rediscovering' the hat these days, so how about a small crystal buckle to be worn on the hat band? It could just clip on & off to give any man's hat wardrobe a touch of luxury?

Re: You In 1981.

I found this via Google: http://www.imaginedoingityourself.co.uk/Images/Double_square_crystal_buckle%20small.jpg

Maybe the men's version could just be a single line of crystals so as not to look too 'flashy'?
