"What more can be said about this store other than it's a classic. The man is a living legend of sorts, bringing American ivy league style to London since back in the 60s. This is a gem of a store, and the sort of place people make pilgrimages to come to from far off lands."
Finally!
Time to head out. You know where.

How long does it take a bloke with a crop to play with his hair?
My last word on JS today:

Hubert Swaine was in there this afternoon, kissing the shoe cabinet, kissing the boys, and leaving eventually in tears wheeled out by his nurse who had to force feed him diazepam. The lump has been in my throat all afternoon. J.Simons is gone.

PS Does anyone other than me and Russ give a shit on this website? Ha ha. Talk Ivy my fucking arse.
I went past...the empty window was strange...as I said, I do feel like I've missed something.

I did pop my head in today at lunchtime: I have had a few gems from J Simons over the last 5 - ish years. I found today's mood almost morbidly reverent.
They were the place for my staples: Weejuns, pea coats, seersuckers shirts and corduroys.
I salute the institution, and reckon the world is poorer without it.
Yours
Mark
I had almost bought a last minute ticket, but there were some serious reasons not to go (my health and my bank account...) and John had told me on the phone about the possibility of opening a new shop in Autumn.
I still hope that's possible.
Long time lurker but it feels right at this moment to be a bit self-indulgent and point you in the direction of my tribute to John's and all that...
apologies if you've read it/or it's been mentioned before

^Great piece, cheers...
For obvious reasons the man and his shop just couldn't mean the same to me that it means to some of you. I am however saddened for all of you who it effects and hope the man can continue you on in one form or the other. Any shop, anywhere in the world, that sells these clothes is to be celebrated and missed when absent.
Hear, hear.
I am sorry to see it go, but not in the same way as some of you.
Squire Shop and then Ivy in the 60s and 70s for shirts and shoes. Did not know the owner or even that the two places were under common ownership.
I found out about J. Simons through a conversation about how useful a cheap Harrington would be as an alternative golf top - instead of the expensive Goretex stuff. I was told there was 'a shop run by a couple of gay blokes down near the Theatre Royal'. I looked in and they had Baracuta - not the cheap garments I was expecting.
On subsequent visits I bought Haggar shirts etc but they were not a patch on stuff I used to get decades before.
My brother had chanced upon the place in Strutton Ground that sold the cheap Weejuns and Royals so I recently had a look in there too.
Style councillor did have an alternative view on the shop although he likes to couch his points in aggressive sentences. There is a groupthink on J Simons but there are other views too.
There is also rewriting of history by knobheads like Danny Dyer and Gary Bushell. This clip is worth a replay for the views inside the shop from about two minutes in:-

I'm sorry it closed. I was a frequent customer in the 1980s, occasionally in 90s, before I even knew what Ivy was. It was just 'prep' or 'American' to me, or Sloane with a young American twist. I bought loads of loafers and OCBDs there.
With cheaper rents he'd have carried on. The location falied him, not his vision.
And his own range of clothing continues to grow.
We'll see...
Respect to you, Kingstonian.
Jim
Just had a look on style councillor's blog

He makes some good points and he is stressing craftsmanship now, rather than moaning about prices. I suspect his aggression may bring him the trouble he complains about though.
Interesting to see he has steel heels on his longwings. I never found they prolonged the life of the heel; but they do make a lot of noise.
