Favourite Albums

In an attempt to be introduced to some great new music I thought the topic of top 5 favourite albums might be interesting. In no particular order, mine would be, Tom Waits The Heart of Saturday Night ,although it could have been any of half a dozen of his. Sun Ra Jazz in Silhouette one of the greatest jazz albums to my mind. Marvin Gaye I Want You, so so soulful. Bob Dylan Nashville Skylines, Dylan at his peak for me. And finally, The Velvet Underground Live 1969 a bit of a greatest hits but it was my introduction to my favourite rock band. On a different day, I might have chosen a different 5 but these would always be some of my all time favourite lps.How about you?

Re: Favourite Albums

1. Art Pepper - Smack Up
2. Angels and Demons at Play + The Nubians of Plutonia - Sun Ra and his Myth Arkestra
3. Coltrane Plays The Blues - Saint John Coltrane
4. Sex Mob Does Bond - Sex Mob
5. Urubu - Antonio Carlos Jobim

What I've been digging this week in the car and at home - but more Saint JC at home.

Art Pepper's Smack Up is an album I've been returning to again and again and again for the last two years - sheer modernist genius.

Re: Favourite Albums

Off the top of my head:

Muddy Waters - any Chess compilation (his recordings before and after Chess were also mostly outstanding)
Cal Tjader - particularly 60s and 70s e.g. Mambo Sangria
Spoon - At The Rennaisance
Spear - any Studio One or Marcus Garvey
Roberto Torres - Retrato Musical (what I'm listening to now in fact)

bonus album - any Louis Jordan compilation featuring his big hits from the 40s

Re: Favourite Albums

Top 10 (Five is too hard)

Black Flag- My War
Sunn O)))- White 1&2
Bill Evans- Portrait in Jazz
Television- Marquee Moon
Joy Division- Closer
Tomasz Stanko- Suspended Night
Bird and Diz- Carnegie Hall
Desmond Dekker- 007 Shanty Town
Art Pepper- Intensity
Otis Redding- Otis Blue

Honorable Mention: Black Sabbath- Sabbath Bloody Sabbath ( I went through three (2 LP, 1CD) copies of this because of repeated listening between the ages of 15 and 20.

I think I could make a list that expanded into the hundreds but these ten see the most repeated spins.

Re: Favourite Albums

I couldn't possibly give you a definitive top five - but here are the first ones that came up in no particular order:

David Axelrod - Songs of Experience
João Gilberto - João Gilberto (1973)
Sun Ra - Angels and Demons at Play & The Nubians of Plutonia (good call Hepcat)
J Dilla - Donuts
Ennio Morricone - Veruschka

It's unpossible. I'm leaving at least 500 others out.

Re: Favourite Albums

Tom Waits, Cal Tjader, Otis Redding, Burning Spear, Bill Evans - what a great bunch you lot are. We should have a club in real life.
