The Mosaic Records June 2010 magazine landed through my mail box today. On the front cover is a beaming Ahmad Jamal in button down, repp tie slightly loosened and top button open - now that's what I call immaculate Ivy tinged with hard-bop soulfullnes. Cool as fuck.
Someone else would call it "Sprezza".
The box set is due out the end of June beginning of July.
Mosaic, wasn't this the record label that CC refused Michael Cuscuna a link on his site, less he be associated with that damn backwoods music - jazz!? Before he realised it was something he could endlessly milk every six months with the same cheap copy about the sprezza of Miles Davis at Newport/Carnegie Hall/Blackhawk/at the Plaza/Berlin/Isle of Wight festival.
Sadly, yes.
And worse than that it was MC's fantastically generous offer to open up the Blue Note photographic archive that Chens turned down. A story I must admit I do enjoy telling...
Mosaic & MC are wonderful. Too good for some!
"button down, repp tie slightly loosened and top button open....."
There's a Jack Wilson Bluenote album where he sports that exact same look, as I recall - East Winds or something?
Cool as fark - I have a vintage silk repp tie in just the same design - which reminds me I must dig it out and, er, wear it.
In fact - I'm gona treat you all to a track right now (it's a groover - Lee Morgans in the mix). Gentleman, to the I-spot thread!
Check out the blog Sun Ship http://thesunship.blogspot.com/ for some more Ahmad Jamal and other goodness.
Take a look at the photo of Satchmo in a magnificent double breasted suit in the same Mosaic catalog.
