Ivy Trivia: Did Bobby Kennedy wear Fred Perry in 1958?

He was certainly wearing Lacoste; but there's a photo of him with JFK, Jackie and Ethel in which he looks like he's wearing an FP polo.  Anyone?

Re: Ivy Trivia: Did Bobby Kennedy wear Fred Perry in 1958?

I wish I had the know-how to offer the photo - from a book.  In England, Johnny Moke (I think) was wearing Fred Perry in '58.  The east coast thing - for sure.  'Love Story' presents us with that Ivy/prep blurring - before prep was rewarded its handbook and nice little set of rules.  Throw a party, but keep it clean, that sort of thing.  No banging cocktail waitresses two at a time Russell-fashion.

I have a yearning right about this time of the year, to reclaim FP from the chav brigade.  John Simons once flogged me half a dozen or more of their lambswool jumpers, so subtle and right it makes yer heart bleed to see every little toerag wearing the laurel.

... I hated it when Lacoste/Izod became a 'Loadsa-Money' totem in the 80's - A shirt I associated with Jack in The Odd Couple (Cup throwing scene)...

Ah, '52.  The book is 'Sons and Brothers' by Richard Mahoney.  This might be Staceyboy's area of knowledge, too.

I'm thinking white and white only.

There is a growing list of things to reclaim, isn't there?

Burberry
Fred Perry
Lacoste
Classic Traditional American dress

... ... ... ...   ????

(Is it fair to call 'Trads' Chavs?)

We have to snatch it all back...  fight 'em tooth and claw...  a battle that would be worth winning...  I blame the 1970s...

That's about the best they do. The made in England FPs are a bit suspect though I hear...apparently they can be woven and put together in the third world and then have buttons and laurels sewn on in blighty to be able to say it's made in England and charge a bit more. Even so - it's a pretty lookin' shirt!

P.S.  I gave up searching on Ebay for true vintage.  You need a wicked sense of humour.

Re: Ivy Trivia: Did Bobby Kennedy wear Fred Perry in 1958?

I'm up in Manchester on friday afternoon so may well pop into the Laurel shop off King Street to have a quick look (and feel) of the Freds.

But - I think I'm talking myself out of the idea now - It's difficult to go for a Fred with all the negative connotations (I've now got that Preston bloke(twat) in my head after looking at the models on their site)

I suspect i may end up the other side of St Annes Square - at the Lacoste shop for a plain white number - (never had an issue with the staff there...)

The shirt was launched in '52 at Wimbledon. No idea what it looked like.
