Ivy: Really only a passing phase

Just thinking about some of our Ivy icons:  Woody Allen, who began looking like a defective mental patient around the time he was allowed to become an adoptive father...  Tony Perkins, who went from cool to dodgy once he decided he, too, wanted to become a family man...  McQueen - aside from the G9, was he ever a devotee?  Paul Newman...  the list goes on...
The older men tend to be a better bet.  I would gladly nominate...

Fred Astaire...

Miles Davis.  He lost it when he started to allow his girlfriend to make sartorial decisions for him.

Even Montgomery Clift may have succumbed to awful fashion has he survived into the decade of true awfulness, the 1970's.

Re: Ivy: Really only a passing phase

but were these guys deliberately choosing an ivy look the way someone today would, or were they just going along with the cool look for their day? I tend to think the latter, and sometimes our "ivy heroes" get a bit too much credit when all they were doing was wearing the hip look of their era.  The fact that most did not "keep the faith" alludes to its fad-ery.

For some it was fashion, others realised it was and remains the zenith of style for men.

^Indeed, sadly, I don't know John Simons and the other real hepcats, who we are assured kept the faith; but even Miles sold out.

It strikes me, that only the man in the street and a number of American intellects and politicians kept it real. Possibly.

When it comes to fame, what is real? Roger Daltrey, the ultimate mod singer was in fact, allied to the teds and rockers. That was the music and style he digged the most.

I wouldn't say Roger was the ultimate mod singer. I think he just saw it as a fashion, a phase and he was sort of guided into wearing that stuff. Which might have some similarities. Maybe.
