I don't think of myself as religious. I've never called myself a Christian. I find it difficult to believe in an afterlife. Yet, even as a dim 15-year old, listening to Jagger singing his LSE blues, I was aware of some spiritual dimension. Listening to jazz, even more so. Redemptive qualities? Definitely. After silence - comes of reading Kierkegaard - listening to Coltrane or 'Kind Of Blue' is what does it for me - particularly after getting an earful of my daughters emo rubbish. Judaism is possibly what interests me more than anything. But I love churches best when they're empty, silent and cool. Ivy style seems well suited to all of this. Just a feeling I have, possibly mistaken.
Sun Ra just came to mind when I read your title.
"I dig" that Rip. For me spirituality is very sensory as opposed to mostly internalised. Good music for the ears, good clothing for the touch and eyes.
Amen to that!
Jazz is the spirit of eternal exploration, the music that will take us to the God(s). The only truth that can be trusted.
There's several good Kerouac quotes on this. Like Blake's definition of eternity, it is in love with creation of time and space.
Its also urbane and cool. What more could you want?
I'm glad I'm on the right track here. I find my view of existence is subtly changing.
Redemption. Came through music, clothing, literature, now planting and cultivating. The Ivy mood thing? We all care about texture and colour, I think.
