Continental Influences on British Cinema

We all know the stories of mods watching French and Italian movies for styling details.  I got interested, around the age of eighteen, in movies like 'Repulsion' and 'Cul-De-Sac', then 'Blow Up'.  Haven't seen them now for many, many years, but I've never forgotten some of the images.  They were a bit 'anti-mod' for us then because we only really knew about the new breed or 'Ready Steady Go', and went with our developing interest in Sartre, Camus, Burroughs, Selby etc.  They seemed very 'grown up', like Woody's 'Stardust Memories' or 'Taxi Driver'.  You saw them on late night TV of course, or sometimes in arty cinemas.  They touched on 'Swinging London', but were more sinister than, say, 'Georgy Girl' or 'Alfie'.  They also featured far sexier actresses like Dorleac:  Redgrave and Asher simply couldn't compete - although Millicent Martin I found deeply sexy.  Anyone like the genre?
