Together with Georgie Fame and Dusty Springfield, I was very aware of these guys circa 1965-66. R&B, born of the blues-beat boom; best forgotten in their later incarnation, but some of the 60s hits are still worth a listen.
Saw them live a few times in 1963, good musicians. Jazzier than most except perhaps Graham Bond. They disappeared from our circuit once the hits started coming.
Was that a dancehall type circuit, Chris? Woman I was talking to this morning spoke of seeing them at some seaside place. Also of meeting Ray Davies whilst dressed in her school uniform. Just for a chat, I think.
I used to see them at The Refectory, Golders Green. It was a basement club, underneath the Refectory Bar. Other bands I saw there at around this time were Zoot Money, Cyril Davies, Zoot Money, The Birds plus loads of others that don't come immediately to mind.
PS Didn't The Kinks have an LP called Scoolboys In Disgrace!!

Anybody see that band featuring Ronnie Wood's brother?
The Art Woods?
I may have done, in truth I can't remember.

Sweet Mary, Looking For a Saxophonist... nice versions of Keep Looking (Solomon Burke), I Feel Good (Benny Spellman), I Keep Forgetting (Chuck Jackson), These Boots etc... not bad the Artwoods, not bad...
The first album 'the five faces of' is good, great cover of adderleys sack o woe. The ost for up the junction is allso good, but is really just session men.
Artwoods are one of the great unsung 60's outfits. pretty much all recorded is fantastic.
I have seen a photograph in which it looks like they might all be wearing patch Madras trews.
