On the subject of loafers, theirs are quite lush. Very un-American in their look, I think. The worse I have seen recently (generally speaking) are dinky little basket tassells - worn by a plump little middle-aged woman on a train. Weston are rather expensive, of course - I bought mine from a Belgian chappie on Ebay.
the only proper ones are the #180
the old man who started the company went to the USA in 1926 and came home and designed the #180, several decades of french have since worn them, quality is solid, that's good enough for me as i am not obsessed with owning junk just because of a tenuous link with past glories (i.e. weejuns, alden, etc)
didn't our very own Weejun react to the autopsy:

explain why you are parting company with them, bad fit? boredom? poor match with wardrobe? peer pressure? children on streetcorners laughing and pointing?
Bad fit. Slight indifference. Poor match with wardrobe. The feeling that somebody else might enjoy them more than I.
