Americana Without It Being 'Americana'...

Too easy to give the wrong impression.

I loved Gibson Gardens' name-checking of Norman Rockwell a fortnight or so ago.  'Grammy Hall' territory.

Nothing wrong with tail-fins, either, but there's a more subtle dimension to it.  Which is why stumbling into a shop that thinks itself 'cool' is often such a gruelling, worthless experience.  Too much Jimmy Dean, too little Jimmy Stewart.

There's a good book out now about how to reinvigorate the Western economies: "Jimmy Stewart is Dead: Ending the World's Ongoing Financial Plague with Limited Purpose Banking"

The lessons of 'A Wonderful Life' are upon us.

Amusing that he comes across as a straight-up Democrat in that movie, opposed to Lionel Barrymore's grasping Republican.  Stewart was a die hard conservative Republican, of course, who was sniffy about the former Democrat Reagan.  Stewart remained true to his principles, unlike flighty old Frank - threw a hissy fit after JFK opted to chow down with the Old Groaner...

Re: Americana Without It Being 'Americana'...

Jimmy Stewart had something sadly lacking today, namely the ability to get along, sometimes extremely well, with those who had different political opinions. He dearly loved Henry Fonda, about as a political opposite as you can get. I think he realized what used to be called common humanity trumped petty concerns like who was to be, in that general's famous quip, the "temporary occupant of the White House."

He remained true to himself while being a genuine friend to so very many. And yes, he was quite a well-dressed man. Sometimes these things go well together.
