Best £50 I ever spent. I know some don't like them but they can be worn with more or less anything down below. Did someone once say they'd become ubiquitous?
One thing to bear in mind about the classic military Pea Coat is that it is about as far from Natural Shoulder tailoring as one is likely to see. The shoulders are very square and the waist is very tailored.
I agree that they are very versatile as they can be dressed up and down to equal effect.
A quick perusal of high-end fashion menswear in town the other day stresses their ubiquity. Everyone from McQueen to Watanabe and all points in-between was offering a variant of the look.
Nothing beats the USN version from before the late 70s. It was at this point that the Kersey wool spec. was changed to a lined and backed Melton wool. The coats after this vintage are scratchier and nowhere near as nice. Don't get me wrong, the later coats will still keep you warm and will still be stylish, but comparing them to an earlier coat from WWII to the end of Vietnam is quite an eye-opener. The finish and overall quality of the earlier coat is far, far superior on every level.
Definitely one area where buying vintage is worth every penny.
The shoulders on mine are not too square. I simply like it in the same way that I like my US Army combat jacket. Put it on and go get that Balti!
I love p-coats.
What do people think of gentrified versions, e.g., in cashmere?
I would not want one that had not actually been worn by a sailor.
They're a great coat. I had one in college and it vanished rather than wore out.
