Back to basics... Wearing one lovely Brooks now, courtesy of the shamrock... Who'll own up to not having at least one in their closet?
courtesy of shamrock got some more yesterday. wore one today and probably tomorrow if it ain't a tattersall sero day. weather will determine, both mine and outside.
The OCBD with a decent roll is the ultimate shirt, relegates all those ugly cut away spread collars and the likes into the also rans.
The tab collar in poplin comes a third, with a button down in other cloth a second. The OCBD still wins by a furlong.
We let the Trads claim the plain collar.
The OCBD in terms of functionality and ability to be the shirt version of A Man For All Seasons, is peerless.
We are talking about personal preference here, you can't argue against that.
Brooks also used to do Oxford cloth with plain collars... Lots of other American companies, too... Even FOTL... JS used to sell Hartford plain collars.
Correct me if I'm wrong, I believe nobody does decent shirts at this moment in time. Vintage or made to measure/bespoke (I still can't remember which is the correct term) if you want the classic look.
Probably right. I'm sticking to old Brooks. Not the Hanging Pig stuff.
I tend to fall back on Baggie as a second choice. They wear badly at the back of the collar, but the USA made ones are usually cheap.
I'd be interested to see what sort of fit a J Simons shirt might have. Good collar, material etc being a given, surely, but the cut would be interesting.
I have the chinos - very nice. Extremely tapered so not right for every occasion but pretty great.
Don't tell me Uncle's old gay, jewish pal 'Sludgy' Green will be working in the new store...
To be fair I forgot Mercer when I claimed there are no decent ocds in production, despite the indifference or disdain they have received from many here they are very tasty shirts, except for the excessive bagginess. Presumably the Mercer fit reflects their 'key demographic' i.e. affluent, middle-aged or older Americans - not usually the slimmest of people.
Mercer do offer custom options for reducing the bagginess, they also offer 3rd button and locker loop as custom extras. The problem is, once custom details have been added to the cost, not to mention shipping and customs for those of us outside the US, the total cost per shirt becomes excessive. Ocds are supposed to be daily bread, not an expensive Sunday best.
