Great thread. This Jeff person and his friends ooze style.
I don't know if any of you would find this interesting--I do because I am an unrepentant nerd. Dave Gibbons (the artist on The Watchmen) recently did a graphic novel (expensive comic book) called "The Originals," which is his take on the mods and rockers, set in a an alternate dystopian reality with hovering scooters and a few other nifty details.
His designs for the Originals' (mods) "dazzlerags" (bit of Burgessian futurespeak going on as well) are pretty cool: lots of checked suits, saddle shoes, graphic stripes, etc., mixed in with vaguely sci-fi outerwear. Might be worth a look to the mod enthusiast.
Gibbons was apparently a mod himself, way back when.
Another interesting link BTW :

Hi Jack,
What I forgot to mention above was Ben Sherman BD's but, only the ones with the black label and orange writing!!! Very important as these were of the fitted cut, box pleat at back and the hook....
More Darts - The Rays - 'Daddy Cool', Little Richard's - 'The Girl Can't Help It', Gene Chandler's - 'Duke Of Earl' and The 4 Season's - 'Let's Hang On'.... from here I investigated the originals...... I agree that 'New York in the Dark' is much the better tune....
Your right about 'This is the modern world' inside sleeve... didn't the blousey tart have a bright green jacket.. The front pic underneath the Westway (A40) West London..... It was the reverse of 'All Around The World' single with Weller wearing a shock..horror.. pink BD shirt with a dog tooth jacket that got me.. All Mod Cons with light blue sta-prest, White BD and monkey boots?!
I was too young to understand the finer points of this style but the image just grabbed me.... my mum was dressing me in flares and bloody hideous shoes with a massive raised toe area... I've never forgiven her... all until the 'Two Tone' movement when it all just fell into place..

in the USA, 1980s, when I first got into the cult, there were quite a few fellows that were self-proclaimed 'Rude Boys'. I'd always thought of Rude Boys as black fellows doing their own subset of mod, tho there were plenty of white fellows calling themselves rude boys out here. But it did seem like a way for black guys to separate themselves from everyone else, even tho their style of dress and music taste was the same. From my memories, it seemed like the standard Rude Boy uniform was to look like a living breathing walking Walt Jabsco.
That Specials album was important for me as well, along with the first Selecter and Madness. I was 13 and some school friends had discovered it and we became quite obsessed with the 2Tone look and sound, obviously never realizing the treasure trove of sartorial heritage we accidentally fell into nor the way it would affect how I dress, 20+ years later.
btw, there is a great line in the movie Sid & Nancy during a club scene where a black punk rocker is talking to a gal and he says to her "I Don't want to be a punk no more", and she says "Yea? Then wotcha gonna be?" and he replies "I'm going to be a RUDE BOY!" It's a quick 15 sec scene but it always struck a chord in me
It was a look & a style most of all back in the day.
Label queens like me came later.

Paul Gambaccini (I'll never learn how to spell his name...) used to use this as his theme once upon a time.
"... And he's CUTE! In his Mohair suit..."
Even if you're sitting down you surely have to bust a move when you hear this. No?

This should have been the first 'Soft Cell' single, but it lost out to 'Tainted Love'. Marc Almond returned to it later as a part of his one man show.
Not much to do with Skins...
Pounds tho'., don't it?

Has anybody got a source for where I am able to view slade when they were a skinhead band- a youtube search mainly reveals- come on feel the noise and there ever popular christmas anthem?
Wasn't 'Ambrose Slade' the original name from their Skinhead years????
Bloody marvelous stuff-Alex thankyou - I wonder how British music would hve been -if slade had kept with this genre -rather than moving towards Glam rock.
Thankyou for posting.
