Re: More for the mix: Skinheads!

ss, get smart, very good points re. discovering style via music. living in the faraway siberian outpost called finland i also found clothes and later (hopefully) style through music. being quite the same generation as get smart and soulstylist my progression was / is:

- punk / hardcore / psychobilly
- two-tone -> ska
- indie / madchester
- acid house (messed my sartorial sense for years, got to admit, it was all baggy jeans and trainers for a long time lol)
- 'acid jazz' -> 'proper' jazz, funk, northern soul
- northern soul, musicwise i'm having a bit of punk / indie revival going on as well (as well as a growing interest towards rhythm'n'blues, doo-wop & rockabilly - the real old one, not towards any neo- / psychobilly things). no chance in hell i'd go back to my sartorial nonsense of thos eighties days long gone though! big_smile

Re: More for the mix: Skinheads!

A similar story here: Music first, leading on to clothes. For me it was Jazz and all those great sharp black Ivy wearing guys I saw on the LP sleeves. Later came the white Ivy wearers Chet Baker & Bill Evens. Music also got me into film (to see the clothes) and various books I wouldn't have otherwise read I don't think (again, to see or to read about the clothes). You can also argue that most of my traveling, especially to the US, has been clothes related and that all links back into my love of Jazz. A style junkie & it all started with this:

Re: More for the mix: Skinheads!

Great pics, Get Smart!

I am not absolutely sure, but I wonder if the one of the policeman and skinhead depicts the removal of the boot laces from the unfortunate skin.  This was a tactic employed (with little success) at Southend on Sea and at other seaside resorts on Bank Holiday weekends in order to stop the rampaging along the sea front.

One particular Bank Holiday Monday on arrival at the Railway station at Southend a couple of my mates that were still wearing boots (I was in Royals) had their laces removed immdeiately.  We of course went straight to Woolworths and purchased replacement laces!  It took up a bit of our beer money and the laces weren't quite pukka, but we were back in business!

Re: More for the mix: Skinheads!

...thanks - I thought something like this. Still - it's the way it is/was and everyone can only live in his own time.

...but I think like football in the 6ts help to spread the look over Great Britain, music did the same in the late 7ts/8ts internationally. Wether this still is the 'real' deal is arguable. For me it feels like this...

* Home Cookin' @ Filthy MacNasty's
68 Amwell Street, EC1R 1UU. (020) 7837 6067
9th December; 6pm-11pm; FREE

A brand new Sunday evening jazz session with a unique playlist of bebop, hard bop, soul jazz, Latin jazz, funk and blues selected by DJ Jean-Paul Séculaire (Right On!) from his collection of vinyl LPs and 45s. Filthy MacNasty's is a self styled whiskey cafe in Islington that is popular with those in the know. No dancefloor per se, but blue notes, booze and pie and mash make for the perfect social event.

That could have beeen made for me -

I don't dance much anymore what with my back, but I do like to sit & nod.

Thanks!

Re: More for the mix: Skinheads!

Show me the other site which can showcase all these voices?

Skins (Hard Dandies) walking along side Bespokers (Old School Dandies).

No attitudes.
No crap.
Just style.

My freind Dave who was a Skin back in 1970 was telling me about  Skins in Hertford back in the day which if your even been to Hertford it now a very Conservative place.
How he and he mates us to ruck with the Seal Farm Skins and Ware (Seal and Ware just a few Minute walk from Hertford) and about his days visting Spurs
