Re: In Praise of the Vietnamese Made Clarks' Desert Boot

Well I went out for coffee - came home with some cola desert boots.

I used to wear the brown ones all the time in my moddy-boy type days and I think I prefer the cola colour a lot. A lot more.

They are from - hanging head in shame - Urban Outfitters (I get a student discount there). I think as someone put it above, they are an honest shoe. A quality akin to the weejun maybe?

John Simons goes into charity shops and if they're good enough for him...

I rarely miss.

The best finds come from charity shops

Before anyone makes the point, remember what Ho said, wisely:  "Better to eat French shit for five years than Chinese shit forever".  Or words to that effect.

Staceyboy, as Russell Street and I know, has an unerring eye in this area.  I've tried hard to train mine - but I still sometimes mistake a pale blue Ben Sherman for something better!

^Oh me too Andy, me too! The pride coming before a fall bit. The other way around too. Last Autumn in Richmond I scanned the rail in one shop (at the bottom of Hill Rise of all places) and dismissed the stock on offer at a glance. I only took a second look because I had to walk by the rail to prise my son away from the toys and books. And there on the rail was a beautiful, pale blue vintage Paul Stuart with a club collar. Three quid.

Young D - as we know - has his Dad's eye for beautiful women.  Three quid!  Like my Brooks Makers half-sleeve, one of the most excellent shirts I own.

^True! wink Moving this back towards the thread, I was looking at Clarks dessies recently here in town in both the Clarks shop and over in John Lewis. Don't recall seeing any made in UK branding? A recent twist in the manufacturing tale? I'm curious.

Re: In Praise of the Vietnamese Made Clarks' Desert Boot

I wasn't convinced the guy I spoke to on the 'phone this morning quite knew what he was babbling about.  Bottom line is, Vietnamese I will stand for, Chinese I won't.  Clarks' tend to be A1 brainless shites for even the simplest type of footwear.  The girls they employ often seem to be two apples short of a picnic and get easily flustered by relentless questioning.
