So Who Now Does The Finest Madras Shirt?

Summer's on its way out, but yesterday I picked up an Eddie Bauer half-sleeve for £3.49 in the local Red Cross shop.  It looks nice, but I doubt if it'll bleed.  I simply keep on buying them, including LS examples that I intend to have converted into halves.  I think Bauer is cheap and cheerful, isn't it?  This charity shop also had an Orvis half-sleeve and a Japanese made zip-up jacket in big green and white checks.  I've noticed intriguing stuff creeping in there before, and they've had some excellent Smedley polo shirts during the past few years.
Anyway, I don't much rate Gant for Madras - the collar is still too cheap and cardboardy after repeated washings.  An Italian make - I forget which - is lovely and soft all over.  Neil Martin also seems to be a good make.  Others have no name to them.  Aureum do quite a nice one - LS.  I wore them in France.  No-one else seemed to.

If you can hack Lands End, this year's offering was very nice indeed and is almost certainly on offer by now.

I don't have that one, but I wouldn't mind getting it....

It's interesting that the first one is described as authentic Indian Madras yet, if you zoom in on the label it reads "All Irish Linen, made in China"!

Odd.  Decidely odd.  I would still prefer to err on the side of caution.

I have this one and another in a very traditional colorway of madras that is no longer on the website.  I love them.  Fit, collar and color. Definitely made in India, confirmed on both shirts.

Why won't the bleeders bleed?

I think it's to do with modern washing agents, at least in part. They won't allow "loose" colour to attach to a fabric. My madras shirts have faded, but I haven't witnessed any blending or bleeding of colours.

One day I will write on here about annelid dies, India and why Kipling hated the Germans - but now, I feel, is not the time.

Interesting, the directions this forum will sometimes take.

Re: So Who Now Does The Finest Madras Shirt?

Very true - he pulled strings to get Jack a commission (he had very bad eyesight) and he was MIA presumed dead at Loos. Kipling was wracked with guilt ever after. Witness these lines of his:

If any question why we died
Say "Because our fathers lied"

Strong stuff.

But his anti-German attitude predated the First War and was indeed, in large part, based on annelid dies and their effect traditional Indian craft!

Re: So Who Now Does The Finest Madras Shirt?

Interesting that Kipling was anti-German instead of anti-French; which might have been more usual.

Indeed - he was in fact a Francophile - that's what I like about Kipling, a man of many contradictions.

Re: So Who Now Does The Finest Madras Shirt?

Actually - and I studied the period of the Third Republic with great interest and puzzlement - I still believe France to be, as my tutor put it, 'the cradle of civilisation'.  They seem to take their intellectuals seriously.  I mark reading Sartre and Camus at eighteen part of my training for Ivydom.
