Polo guidance

Hi chaps
No not equestrian pursuits!  I'm looking for a steer on people's preferred brands of polo shirt.  I have always had Fred Perry's, ever since the suede times in the early 70s.  But these days the quality of them just doesn't seem to be consistent.  Sometimes I've bought a Fred P polo and it still looks good after many outings. However others, although they are always washed carefully in our house, soon shrink or lose their shape.  Dark colours often seem to fade out after a few washes. I don't mind laying out 60 quid for a polo shirt but it's nice if they last for while. I've tried a couple of other brands like Pringle and Jaeger but they weren't much better. I just want to know where to get a good quality, hardwearing conventional polo shirt.  I like basic colours with the minimum of detailing.  Obviously prominent logos or writing are a no no as I don't like to walk around looking like a billboard! Despite what I've written above I'm not hung up on brands too much, I wouldn't care if they came from Asda (as long as no one knew of course!!!) Any advice will be much appreciated.

Re: Polo guidance

Sunspel and Smedley have been mentioned positively, although I can't speak to their quality. Only own two lacostes at the moment. Oh and two Ralph Lauren ones, which rarely see any wear because of the stupid long back

Re: Polo guidance

LaCoste are on Secret Sales at the moment for £39, although I don't have any myself (I'm not overly enamoured by what that crocodile communicates to me).

I do have several Sunspel Riviera polos, which is my personal preference (not least because there's no motif), but like you I also own a few Freds.

Robbo what a fucking wanker you are.

Re: Polo guidance

Ooops!

A year or so ago the classic "Isis" was on sale at half this price http://www.johnsmedley.com/mens/mens-shirts/isis.html

Don't know your location but Isis is a shirt which Paul Stuart in New York private labels at about $225? It's probably private labeled by the likes of T&A, etc. in the UK - but I don't know that as a fact.

This is a dressier knit shirt which is full-fashion* knitted of Sea Island cotton. Straight hem. It's the shirt Ian Fleming had James Bond wearing in the novels. Ten years ago Ralph Lauren Purple Label had them knitted in a more expensive cotton and priced at $295.

It needs hand washing and may shrink - it's relatively light weight and delicate.

Out of your price range now but you may check for sales in the future.

*The separate panels are knitted to shape and then "sewn" together with yarn instead of thread. It's a better and more expensive construction than cut knitted material which is sewn with thread.

Re: Polo guidance

Peacock's polos. £6
Smashing cut, good quality, longer tail, side splits, nice collar size.
It's the look man, not the friggin' price.
If the looks right, who cares. Loosen up!

Re: Polo guidance

Charity shops, during the warmer months, are stuffed full of polo shirts.  Take your pick.  My Alan Paine and Smedley were each under a fiver.  Even genuine Lacoste can be picked up for the price of a kebab.

Re: Polo guidance

I bought 2-3 Hartford polo shirts from John Simons.  Does anyone know the origin of these?

I do like them - and I recommend them unreservedly

Re: Polo guidance

Are they the ones with the pocket?  They're French, I think.  Ken Lovegrove can be seen wearing one on the Simons Facebook site (at least according to a reliable source, Mr. G).  I'd like one very much.
