Now those were slightly heady days - although I felt it in my bones that Labour were going to lose yet again to Margaret Thatcher. I remember an exciting Friday evening with my fiancee at the time, grooving to Cajun and chatting to a very left-wing solicitor about Labour's chances. Pop singers who came out for the Tories tended to be few and far between - Gary Numan? - and I suppose Weller and co. made us feel good about supporting capitalism via our manic record-buying. But I was heavily into Robert Johnson by then. My fiancee - exotic, privately educated, highly snobbish - became my first wife and the mother of my largely apolitical daughter. Who else was on board? Billy Bragg? Well, he's still around. Campaigning against the dreaded BNP in Barking, wasn't he? I suppose Red Wedge was doomed to fail, but it seemed a positive thing just for a moment or two. Pity Kinnock turned out to be such a smug, Europhile prick.
Weller, Bragg and The Communards!
The Redskins! Still popular in Germany, for some reason.
Funny about Sir Cliff. He then got chummy with Blair. Bill Wyman is a Tory voter, as is Bryan Ferry. I would not cast my vote nowadays in either direction.
I remember Weller bailing out after Spandau turned up in a limo PMSL

A few more wind turbines ought to do it. I remember the partial defection to the Greens back in 1989. I'm not absolutely certain that they hurried back to their constituencies and prepared for government. But they may have done.
"Sooner or later
You're going to listen to Ralph Nader..."
Has anyone?
The Redskins turned it down because it wasn't Red enough for them. Still one of the 80s great bands though - great videos on Youtube.
Junior Giscombe and one of the bloke's from Heaven 17 were also involved. I saw the package at Hammersmith Odeon (just to see the Style Council rather than out of any political activism) and it was all a bit sad. Ditto the Council Collective's single for the Miners with Jimmy Ruffin and Vaughn Toulose who I think was something to do with Department S though I could well be wrong.
Some serious 'talent' there, Tory Boy.
I think the devil can sleep soundly tonight, he still has the best tunes, and the Tories are unlikely to catch up any time soon, judging from that list.
A Tory version of Billy Bragg would be very amusing.
Perhaps he could go by the name of William Blowhard, and perform titles like 'There Is Power In Communion'?
Weller amuses me when he admits to knowing one or two people who vote Conservative. He really should get out more often.
I believe he gets his hair done by the same lady who did Margaret Thatcher's, that's possibly the connection.
