This is really just to complement my earlier Ray Davies thread and to remind myself - and hopefully others - of how great they became after that initial burst of sound. I've always enjoyed the eccentrics of pop music, such as Ian Dury and Wreckless Eric - whatever happened to him? - and enjoy playing the game of six degrees of seperation - the ex-modess who does my alterations met Ray when she was in her school uniform. 'Lola' must be right there in my non-jazz top 20.
They're my guilty pleasure. I think Ray Davies is a clever, wonderful songwriter. 'Two Sisters', 'Too Much on my Mind', 'Autumn Almanac', all of Village Green.

Nothing quite like having a guilty pleasure or two. Another of mine is very early ska.
LOL! We're only supposed to listen to Chet, Trane and Bill Evans on here, mon.
Yeah - that's not how I roll!
I don't know if there's any sense in comparing the two, but I prefer The Kinks to The Beatles. As Toffeeman said, great songwriting.
Indeed - unintended pun notwithstanding.
The Kinks, of course, influenced The Clash and Lydon, as well as Paul Weller.
The early singles are amazing, and The VGPS as Toffeeman mentioned is a very nice album! My fave Kinks song is "Waterloo Sunset"... I've never listened to their later recordings, not even one of their 70s albums, though... Was there anything worth listening to?
I have always had a somewhat exclusivist approach to music (I only got to hear the Beatles' 'Revolver' about ten years ago for the first time, always considered them to be too popular to be any good). As a result, I know the Kinks' 60s output damn well near by heart, but haven't got a clue about their works past 'Percy'.
I understand there are gems to be found if one's prepared to haul the depths of their LPs and once you come to grips with the fact that it will sound nothing like their earlier recordings.
Just had a nice listen to 'Lola', 'Days' and 'Waterloo Sunset'. I'm no fan of The Beatles, God knows, but 60s songs like 'Eleanor Rigby' are thousands of times better than the wailing, droning crap my daughters go in for.
Love the Kinks. They have a sense of humor.
Sunny Afternoon is a favorite of mine
