Wigwam crew
Believe it or not, Ben Sherman do a reliable sock.
wigwam and fox river are both good. some of the new smartwool blends are especially fantastic performance-wise, warm without being sweaty, and come in some nice color schemes. fox river ragg wool get the vote in the department. carhartt are nice too. also great when they can be found are navy issue "sea socks"-an ultra-thick cream colored 75% wool/25% cotton blend, the mother of all socks. i find wool socks to be healthier for the feet than cotton and wear them most months of the year.
I'm quite into the Uniqlo range at the moment, loads of good colours (I'm especially partial to the burgundy, the mustard and the royal blue) and at £6.99 for 4 pairs, they're a snip.
red wing boot socks if i need something thick and padded
otherwise normal dress socks, just ones that are longer in length
Timberland 'smart wool' socks during the colder months for me, otherwise just cotton Falke ones...

These socks are really, really good for boots. Cushioned footbed, hardwearing yet soft. A pair of RedWing Gentleman Travelers which had steadfastly refused to break-in over a three year period were rendered very comfortable by these socks. Once they could be comfortably worn they broke-in in no time, so these socks are akin to a really cheap upgrade of your outdoor footwear.
Halls also offer the sea boot sock. These are very thick indeed as shamrockmonkey notes above, so much so that they will probably necessitate the wearing of sized-up boots. Perfect with Maine Hunting Shoes and the like I would have thought and probably an essential in the more northernly winter.
Silvermans also stock a submariners cream roll neck for a great price, and I have seen the same item priced at 3x that in other stores. All there stuff is actual military issue, it's not repro so these will be high quality and are no more than any pair of Pantharella or Burlington sock?
I'm not sure military issue spells high quality and durability. After all these things have to be paid for and issued thousands of times... Obviously depends on the item though.
