Is it the sleeves? I like the look of the shoulders and the lapel myself.
i disagree re. the fit, imo the jacket is just perfect. the jacket just sort of flows on the bloke there. sorry for a bit sloppy expression (flows) but due to language barrier i cannot get a better expression. and the lapel roll is perfect, i wish i owned a sports jacket with a roll like that.
i had a discussion w/ a non-online friend over the jacket the other week. ever since me and him saw the picture on the blue note covers book the first time around, we've been impressed. imo the jacket somehow captivates the essence of the natural shoulder and the sack cut.
beat me up if i'm wrong.
but to me this picture and that jacket is Pure Ivy Poetry. no words needed really.

Love it, too! This is the style... I piss on the Thom Browne take on the look...
It's a look I'd find difficult to pull off convincingly. Too ugly and ungainly. But those who can, well, God love yer...
Yeah, these are also two nice cuts, sure... but I think there's just nothing wrong with a bit of room...
I really love that cut in the photo (like heikki I fell in love with that cut when I first opened G. Marsh's Blue Note cover book) and I definitely prefer a comfortable cut to something that feels restricting. No problem with the sleeves or the waist IMO...

I've always thought this was the ideal sack suit cut.

Images speak louder than words TTR and I knew you'd come up w/a satisfying answer anyway, supporting your own statement as well as Moose's. I hereby stand corrected
Alex, Thank you for fixing that. I always seem to have problems posting pictures on this forum. I might prefer a bit smaller lapel but to me the picture above is everything I want a sack cut to be.
I'd have that gentleman pegged as anything but English. He looks like a focussed Roman or Milanese business type.
It's Elliot Richardson. There's an awful lot of Marcello Mastroianni in that photo though, I have to admit.
Forgive my ignorance but who is Elliot Richardson? I get the Marcello bit loud and clear. You're absolutely right.
No need for apologies, you know much more about American politics than me. Lazy cut & paste from Wikipedia: Elliot Lee Richardson (July 20, 1920 – December 31, 1999) was an American lawyer and politician who was a member of the cabinet of Presidents Richard Nixon and Gerald Ford. As U.S. Attorney General, he was a prominent figure in the Watergate Scandal, and resigned rather than refuse President Nixon's order to fire special prosecutor Archibald Cox.
Nice clotes talk in this topic by the way, thanks Thin Repp and ScarletStreet for sharing your views on the ideal cut.
