keeping it close to your chest...?

... with a tie bar, that is.

I never feel happy wearing a tie without one, but it's tough finding something adequate.

A couple of no-budget corporate nametag clips and a vintage black and white cartoon Boston Terrier are doing service at the moment, but I'd like a couple more.

The Tom Rath affectation of using a Parker Jotter appeals to me, but only seems to work well with just the screwed off cap. Kind of defeats the nonchalant gesture if someone says 'Oh, can I borrow your pen?'...

They should be fun and cheap as chips, these things IMHO (or maybe disgustingly understated-expensive à la Dunhill?).

Any other fans? Any ideas?

I used to enjoy trying to find political ones.  I have a very nice Barry Goldwater and a less useful Democrat - John something.  As you say, cheap as chips.  I think I paid $3 for poor old Barry.  My standby, though, is a plain gold bar.

You need strong nerves to seek these things out. A shitload of horrors on ebay.

Ebay - the American side of it - is a source of unfailing delight for me.  The way they get their grannies to model some threadbare college sweater.  The way they refuse to accept payment on a Sunday.  The amazing dollops of abuse they can dish out if they feel you haven't paid rapidly enough.  The occasional homosexual overtures.

They are also - and more often - inexpensive, sweet and kind.

Anything JFK linked I found to be highly priced.  No-one seemed to want poor old Barry.
