Re: Court Dress

Hello, I'm a longtime lurker and a first time poster, and I have to say that I have been following Grossgrain's and Grayson's threads with a perverse mixture of horror and fascination. Horror at Marc Grayson's uncivilised and boorish behaviour, and fascination with Grossgrain's grace under pressure. I must confess admiration for Grossgrain's intelligent and humane replies to absolute vicious provocation. I am certainly surprised and pleased that someone of obvious integrity plays a part in wielding the 'Scales of Justice'.
Mr Grossgrain, you are a pleasure to read.
Mr Grayson, you are a shit.

Re: Court Dress

Now you say its a collar stay G.S I can see that quite clearly. I've only one shirt with collar stays that I'll be wearing for the first time over this weekend. Its a RTW garment so no surprize the stays are made of plastic, I don't doubt silver makes for much better stays. Silver stays has a real elegant sound to it. I have nothing to compere my plastic ones too and as the shirt is still unworn can't really see the benefit of stays yet anyway. Maybe needs a few washes first? I've seen them in brass as well. Worth upgrading to?

Re: Court Dress

Mr. Grayson have you thought about using Nicotinell? I used the patches and it took the edge right off sir. Mrs. S said I was unbearable til I got the patches. Might work for you, quitting is turning you a little bit like Colonel Gaddafi; stark raving bonkers with nothing sensible to say, always think your right and worst of all, you don't know when to give up. Its almost as if your on the edge of a breakdown Mr. Grayson. Just promise me you won't do anything stupid. If you need to talk, call someone else. I'm busy.

Re: Court Dress

I've not a clue or care why religion suddenly erupted in this thread, but I do appreciate the pictures of British court dress. Thank you, Barrister Silk, for posting them.

I think it is to America's loss that the members of the bar didn't retain a more uniform sense of uniform when in court. It might have gone a long way to keeping a greater sense of things that really matter at hand instead of the meanderings we see so much of here. In the U.S. today the only people who wear such coats, vests and the like are either doormen at fancy hotels. actors in the theater, or some kind of hobbyists who re-enact wars. This is sad, to have such traditional and noble costume relegated to opening doors or public spectacles. Ah well. I'm glad the respect for tradition and the equality of appearance before justice remains alive and well in some places.

I also appreciate your descriptions of your dress when you are not under wig, so to speak, as well as the pictures. I wish I had better words to describe it all, but it seems to me there is a more relaxed sense in the legal profession there as opposed to our nervous earnestness or sheer ostentation. Sure, there are shits in every vocation everywhere, but for some reason, y'all seem to have less in this one and what that says I'm not sure but its oddly comforting. (And not just because I don't often see British lawyers posting in some other places asking for advice for such things as how to put on trousers, what to do when it rains, and is it possible to eat and watch the tv at the same time without choking or chewing off one's own tongue.)
