Re: A college boy haircut

This is one area where referencing movies and ads isn't a bad thing. Sure, in both cases, the actors had makeup artists, stylists and grips following them around making sure it was as it should be. But unless it was a period drama or a sci-fi show, the actors often wore their own hair, to use an 18th century expression.

And one more good thing: these cuts developed in the age of barbers, before men ventured into beauty salons. Pre-salon cuts were by men and for men, while post-salon it became something else entirely.

Re: A college boy haircut

"We used to try & dress like the GIs. They used to give us white raincoats, the hats. It was like being in America. The West Indians, they wanted to be Yankees as well so we would call them Bermuda Yankee or Jamaica Yankee. There used to be a little shop down at the end of Shaftsbury Avenue  - Austins. We used to spend our wages in Austins. You could get the Bermuda jackets, the Ivy league look, the button-down collars and all that. Charlie Watts was in there all the time. You'd always see him on a Friday or Saturday - whenever it was we got paid. We used to get our band uniforms in Austins because they had the American Ivy league look which was the forerunner of the Mod scene. My haircut at the time was the John F. Kennedy thing. And a lot of the GIs would have the razor partings. It was a great scene." Georgie Fame.

I couldn't help asking Mrs Street... Yeah, she thought The Weejun was really hot back in Soho back in the day....

Oh well.

I shall make sure she never meets J.P. Gaul !  wink

(Although she's sure she met him at JS way back when...)

Re: A college boy haircut

this link is alright for terminology:

http://www.ftmguide.org/haircuts.html

I'd place the collegiate cuts right between your military cuts and the business men's haircuts, between the crew cuts and crops on the one hand and the contours,  the longer professional styles, the slightly haircuts etc...
