Yes - funny that with chinos. The simplest things are often the hardest to get "right". Unsatisfying is a good word for it.

Their cords take some getting used to, their linen trousers aren't worth having.  Shorts are okay, providing they're not overpriced (i.e. some guffer on Ebay was knocking them out a few years ago).  I've no idea what kind of mark-up John Simons was putting on them in the old shop.  I don't think Russell Street (Jim) was impressed.

Tootal scarves are another example.  Will be sticking to wool and cashmere (Brooks, Press) from now on.  No more rayon.

Re: Stuff You Probably Wouldn't Buy Again

They just don't seem right and didn't fit my feet.... Plus, the pricing over here is ridiculous. The Lormocs at John Rushton's are a different league altogether at a similar, maybe even slightly cheaper, price tag.

Madras trousers from O'Connell's. Nothing technically wrong with them but I concluded that long pants + Madras = dork. Much better converted to shorts, and it would have been much cheaper to buy them that way to begin with.

Re: Stuff You Probably Wouldn't Buy Again

I think I remember Russell Street posting a thread about madras a while back. It think it was concluded that madras shorts tend to be worn without much notice from Joe Public but if you wear full length madras trousers you suddenly look like you're in fancy dress.

Occasionally you see a post from a 'trad' type forum-goer wearing madras trousers and it does indeed look like they're playing dress up. It looks more dated to me.

Re: Stuff You Probably Wouldn't Buy Again

I would be wary of buying anything new from Press or Paul Stuart.  Brooks have many glaring faults, but their vintage offerings can still be pleasing.

LL Bean chinos; awful cut IMO, way too roomy in the thigh, a very "early 90's" shape. Quality was pretty good though, if you compare the two I prefer Land's End cut(s).

Bean dress cords are nothing to write home about.

I wouldn't buy current season Brooks Madras again. Nice cloth but awful floppy collars and branded buttons.
