Ian Strachan's Beige Raincoat...

I've always loved that story, told so briefly by Hill Rise.  But why did he feel he had to do it?  Christ, I look at my Burberrys' and think it's in a disgraceful condition.  Car tyres?

Re: Ian Strachan's Beige Raincoat...

My collection of Ian stories continues to grow from Mr. Simons & from Ian's one time girlfriend from down in The Forest of Dean...  The more you hear the more fascinating he is, from his policeman father who only spoke once a year to the famous 10 pints story.

I'm going to remember him in the backroom of The Ivy Shop eating a pizza that Mr. Lally had run out to get him, flicking through a porn mag, and not setting foot in the shop for most of the afternoon, leaving the ultra-capable Mr. Lally to rule the roost.

Oh - And sitting in his chair in the shop watching the customers come in and either nodding Hello or frowning intensely at them.

A very stylish man.

Why throw his Mac down in the middle of the road to watch it get repeatedly run over?  Because he was Ian !

A real Face's Face -

Jim, you mustn't mind me digging for these little treasures every once in a while.  I just wish Hill Rise had elaborated.

Re: Ian Strachan's Beige Raincoat...

Hang on - wasn't that my story? Ian told me he put his new Burberry Trench 21 in a carrier bag and left it in the road in Hill Rise for a few cars to go over it to take the newness out of it.

This is  a new story!

Mike Dove's didn't have the carrier bag element.

In conversation IS rated his Baracuta & London Fog raincoats higher.

Interesting.  I have a Baracuta trench.  A great coat in foul weather.

IS had the same & was very proud to walk into the 346 on Madison wearing his only to be told that he was wearing a Brooks Trench by them. He very happily contradicted them.

Re: Ian Strachan's Beige Raincoat...

I miss the little Glaswegian guy who was always in a stone Harrington, Levis and penny loafers. Hard as nails but sweet with everyone, especially Lally. I think he broke into the shop once but they forgave him. Then there was Lally's Spanish wife who was, shall we say, rather an emotional lady, who used to turn up in the middle of the afternoon in her nightie and just park herself in the chair by the door where customers tried on shoes. Lally used to have to pay the cabbie from the till. IS despised her...

I've sort of given up on the idea of a '21'.  Especially as the Baracuta cost only about $15.  It stank.

The Trench 21 is a monster. Trench coats are molto brutto I reckon. THOUGH - I still love it when JS, IS, GM, KL, TM et al wear theirs. Just make me look like the squarest thing on the planet. I look like an insurance salesman in one.

Dexter Gordon looks the biz in your book.  I look like a tramp in the Baracuta.

A good story is, for those who don't know it (plus some who do), worth repeating.
