I'd also like to see what people have been doing on this front. It's a shame Paul's not about as he loved this sort of malarky and knew his stuff.

Welcome to the forum Captain. If I had moderator privileged I'd change your tag to 'pube head' as a sign of acceptance. Have fun.

Ta very Mr Liam... I have enjoyed your work Sir! I've been wanting to "explode" onto the forum for some time but never got round to it...but since my 'petit brun' biccie fell off into my cup of rosie a short time back, I've pretty much downed tools at work in protest  - whilst said fancy is a tres tasty morsel, it's dunkability is truly shite!!

A'noon all....I've lurked here for some time and if I may just say (clears throat, wipes away a tear...)..what a most marvellous forum this is people....so a hearty hello to one n all!!

Now - with regard to thee search for a decent gray sweat.....

I've had an eye (my good one at that) on the Velva Sheen for a while so was wondering if "The Woolster" got round to making said purchase and ergo, what his opinion of said item is?
Can't say I care for my Pike Bros one now (seems to have gorn quite shapeless....) and Buzz Rickson aside, I've not found anything worthwhile:

Feeling quite "cheap", I even dabbled with a UNIQLO one and whilst it's nae bad appearance wise, one wash and you're forever picking bits up from it ...man alive, you're covered in em'...and not a good look for us slapheads to be out n about with, bits of fluf fall over yer bonce - and this coming from a man who once went through an interview with a pube on his head...but I digress..... - not 100 % cotton eeva kids, which I knew wasn't right from the getgo....

Anyhoo, keep up the good work my cherubs....and a pleasant afternoon to you all!

No, I'm afraid I never did got round to it. Something else came in the way, and the search for the perfect sweat got moved further down the list…

But I did try the LVC Levi's Sportswear 50s Double V sweat the other week. Roughly in the same price bracket as the one I linked, and similar in styling. I can't quite put my finger on it, but something about it just didn't sit right with me... So I'm even more convinced now that Velva Sheen is the way to go. But I think I'll have to wait for the sales. A heads up would be much appreciated. I have my eye on the navy one now.

Oh, and welcome to Talk Ivy, Capt'n. I must say, that was one highly entertaining intro post.

Leer - the Land's End looks nice and slim, although the body appears too long for my taste. I'd also prefer wider hem and cuffs & raglan sleeves, although that would not necessarily be a dealbreaker.. Oh well, hourses for courses.

Looks a bit long though....

I would like mine to be a little shorter than that... but my short I don't mean 4" cuff bearded short back and sides and slicked back n-1 deck at the ready with red wings superfuture tts type short....

Re: The Perfect Gray Sweat

Woolster and Captain, I would prefer it a bit shorter, too - "your" short, Captain wink - I know what you mean big_smile - yes it's a bit long, but I can handle it... But it shouldn't be ANY longer, even an inch would be fucking too long. I guess between 2 and 4" shorter would be perfect. But anyway, it is as it is - other than that it fits perfectly and has a very good quality - and as with all LE stuff I didn't pay the full price, so.. whatever. I like it. Great fabric, great colour... and not baggy.

Ah, The Woolster... Bon apres midi to ya...

Ta very for the update.. I mentioned the Velva Sheen to Adam in American Classics last time I popped in, mentioning The Bureau etc. but have heard no more... they seem to be quite thee elusive sweat...

I've since noted that although they don't seem to have any "sweats" on sale, 'Couverture & The Garbstore', a-hem... (Ed - Eh? You what?... you what??... you what you what you what?!?!?!?) do some of their stuff so may pop in and demand "satisfaction" as it's in my manor... by the sound of 'em I may at the very least come away with a bonnet or summat, so worth thee constitutional...

And yup - I've had a look at those LVC ones and agree.... think they're just trying too hard on this one to make it look like they found it in Potsie's/Ralph Malph's locker...

Turning to Leer R, young fella me lad...that LE one looks decent enough but agree with my fellow Cap'n Maddox on the length - how tall are ya if you don't mind me asking? I'd need at least a Large  so could well be keepin' me patellas warm I fear...

Reigning Champ seem to be another make that needs looking at too...

Thee Captain, I am 175cm tall - and normally wearing 46-48 (European size, 36R-40R in Anglo-US sizing, depending on cut etc.) or S-M. Mostly M, that LE is an S. I guess if somebody has my body width but is taller (like 180 or even 185cm) it would fit a bit better... smile

Goodwear might be another to throw in to the mix. No v, but they do have long, holdback cuffs which are a nice period detail. Made in USA and don't charge heritage brand prices which is nice.

Re: The Perfect Gray Sweat

Nice! It doesn't have the notch on the neck that I like but a great price and US made is always good news. I really like the waist band and cuff width. I may well order a couple come pay day. Thanks Adam.

BTW I apologise Captain for my snarky sarcy welcome. I honestly thought you were a troll seeing as your first post came half way through one of Jims crusades against THAT blog and read rather like previous troll messages. Sorry about all that and for calling you pube face. The welcome and have fun were meant though. Even if you are trolling I really hope you do have fun.

I am many things Liam (Pube Head included...) but honest guv...I ain't no Troll!
I also can see how my general patois may make me appear a complete and utter twat to the uninitiated.. but I'm a gobby shite and of the persuasion that why use one sentence when you can write your life story?!?!?

I don't keep us with things on here as regularly as I'd like so was unaware of any recent grief - and so can only emphasise to you all/Jim I have nothing but admiration for this forum!

Back to the sweat then and I'n down with Liam on the Goodyear - just missing that V on the neck but otherwise, it deffo ticks all the boxes!

Seems excellent for the moolah...

Re: The Perfect Gray Sweat

I picked up a Dickies sweatshirt at JS on Saturday, just a small label sewn on to the hem which was easily removed and now it's perfect, only cost £45.

Re: The Perfect Gray Sweat

That's the one. Buzz ricksons sweats are a weird shape, very short in the body and slightly shorter at the back than the front, I couldn't get on with the fit at all. Great quality though.
