Aye it's a classic. Poitier gives hope to large men everywhere.

Re: For SMF - Lilies of the Field (1963)

Thanks so much Woolster! Really nice of you to do that. I love this movie. Poiter is just too cool!

Liam, if you get a chance, watch it, I think you'll like it. If only for those off white 5 pocket pants in those first shots. Can you tell are they Sta Prest or regular denim jeans? Wore my beige 5 pockets today with the dark brown Clarks(no break) looking good. We touched freezing for a bit this morning so I even got to break out the navy Harrington.(sorry Andy)

I'm not an expert on jackets but I love that 3 button, is it herringbone, I can't really tell. And that skinny tie. Just too cool.

Even a madras shirt, chinos, nice work boots and that lightweight spring jacket, what do you call them- Catalina jackets.

Not for the clothes but another great Poiter movie is "Edge Of The City" with John Cassavetes doing his best Montgomery Clift.

I don't think they are Sta Prest. Sta Prest I think came out in 64, a year after this film. I imagine they are regular 5 pocket jeans. Maybe a cotton twill? They do look good and that belt looks great with them. Like a boot lace it is! A nice example of the monotonal outfit. It can work!

BTW the full movie is online in DVD quality. I won't link here to avoid copyright trouble for the Forum owner but if any of you want to watch it and can't find it yourself, PM me and I'll link you it.

John Cassavetes does it well too.

Just googled it.

An interesting - if unlikely - story line.

Bump for Mr. James. I think Poiter looks better in this than as Mr. Tibbs. In both the jacket and tie or the workwear he looks fantastic.

I think they tried to make Sid look ultra-smart in HOTN and it was 67', and Lillies was 63, so maybe a bit softer and mid-boom? I agree with you SMF.

Re: For SMF - Lilies of the Field (1963)

After seeing this movie for the first time I went on a mission to find that Lee jacket. I failed after months and months of searching and settled on a white Levi's jean jacket.  I wore it maybe twice and gave it to a friend.

Re: For SMF - Lilies of the Field (1963)

Elvis Presley wore the same jacket in the movie "Kissin' Cousins",
its the 6-button Lee Westerner 100-J sometimes mistakenly called a ' western rider' jacket (as it was originally styled to be worn comfortably when seated on horseback), there's a good article somewhere on denimhunter about designs of the original Westerner range of jacket and jeans.
They do turn up on ebay for about £100-£200 and Lee Japan did a limited edition repro version recently ( in denim,  off white and sand/biege)  but 'nosebleed' pricing of almost £350 before import duties and shipping.

Re: For SMF - Lilies of the Field (1963)

When it comes to the off white/white denim jacket I always think of Keith Moon on that Who cover album (was it an actual Lee or just a copy?) it's a hard colour to pull off (even paired with dark trousers) I always prefer the dark denim jacket with light colour trouser combo, more relaxed.
