Even THAT forum can't agree on what is and isn't Ivy League.  It's interesting to see Brooks Brothers so resistant to being labeled Ivy League, but of course that is the exact move you want to make when you're at the forefront of a trend.  Interesting too that they refer to Ivy as a subset of Natural Shoulder, instead of its synonym.

Perhaps the best and the most interesting single piece of writing I've ever read on the subject. It's the voice of those who actually made the clothes and marketed them. Fantastic.

Re: The Ivy League Style: The Boom Years.

... and did Sullivan really wear a four button suit in 1956?

I've heard that J Press did them, but I didn't know about Brooks...

Also funny that one of the other Ivy makers thought that Brooks had "repressed their lapels" in order to achieve a wider lapel than the Ivy competitors...

"We've never pressed our lapels".

I believe "Papa" is William F. Buckley's brother James. He was A Senator from NY in the 70s. Elected as a third party Conservative.

You are correct. That is James L. Buckley. He was also appointed o the United States Court of Appeals for the District of Columbia Circuit by Ronald Reagan.

I posted a few more pictures on my blog.

Re: The Ivy League Style: The Boom Years.

the small short button down collar, as mentioned in the Playboy '63 shirt guide...

Doesn't get me as excited as the wider full collar with its smooth bell shaped roll, the full Ivy roll, ideally unfused and very soft....

but for a Madras shirt...

And it's part of the Boom Years story...
