Those little round stickers on the ankles lasted about an hour before you peeled them off.

I hope you enjoy this thread George. It's been brewing for a wee while and as I can't get decent enough screen shots for an I Spy thread just yet, I thought this might cheer you up.

You're a Prince, Liam, a fuckin' Prince. A little late though.

I distinctly remember, being about 7 or 8 and getting them new and sitting in the backyard trying to get them dirty before going out front in front of the other kids. No one wanted new, clean sneakers.

Those army issue ones look like Jack Purcells - without the smiley face. We didn't get issued sneakers, we ran in boots. Oo Ray!

Yeah. They look like standard Chuck Taylors really. I'm only saying they are flyers because of the post on the blog that was next to them. I imagine they only would have had a BF Goodrich tag in them, if any at all. I'll post more of them when I get the chance.

Vans?

Not much of an "Ivy" brand, but I always end up with the "authentic" every time I'm looking for a new pair of canvas sneakers.

I like Authentic and Era, Wahoo. Not Ivy perhaps, but absolutely rooted right into that west coast look.

I'll be posting some more on Van Doren/Vans next.

Somebody ought to invent 'dirty spray' to grubby up your new trainers.

They could sell it in shoe shops along with all the other spays and polishes they try to peddle when you buy a pair of shoes; sundries they call it, and it often has a greater profit margin than the shoes.

It is very difficult to find any pictures of Van Dorens pre 1970. Likewise ads are hard to find from the 60's. If any of you have any pictures of Vans or ads from before 1970, I'd love to see them.

Are those from the 90's NSB? US made?

I don't know too much about the chukkas, I'm not really that fond of them... but I know people who absolutely love them for skateboarding and parkour.

They did a limited edition crepe soled version of these a while back I think... and one with a hessian weave sole too.

Just a little aside... the Converse Skidgrip.

I like these a lot and if they had kept that really chunky plimsoll line(like on the sample style pictured) then I think these would have been big selling skate shoes. As it happened they were also rans next to Vans 'Off The Wall'.

Late 80s and USA made. I'm not really a chukka fan either. These were young man's shoes, so had to go.

Vintage  Skidgrips are still pretty easy to pick up in unworn nick and are certainly better than modern Vans (a travesty in comparison to the glory years of that brand).

Bit the bullet and bought the Japanese Sperry Topsider Authentic Oxfords. So much closer to the Sperry of old than the US-available 75th Anniversary Striper.
