The Best White T Shirt To Wear Under Your Shirt
The white T worn under an open button down collar, a classic ivy look. But as with all such things, detail is all important. Nothing's worse than the white T where the crew neck collar goes saggy after you've had it on for a while and drops out of sight under the shirt.
You must strive for that high straight line of the T shirt proclaiming your ivy'ness to all. Pulling the back of the T shirt down so the front rises up is one dodge, some are even rumoured to wear their T shirts back to front in order to achieve the essential effect. The Hanes 'Beefy T' has been held up to me as one of the best. But now a new contender:

The Gap Stretch T shirt. If you are one of those who insists on only 100% natural fibres, you will have to compromise and accept 4% Elastane. Modern technology provides that high white line under your shirt, wash after wash and they have a good chunky collar too - I'm sold.

This looks tempting... until now I favoured Land's End for having good quality and a great price when it comes to SALE... hm.

It's such a 'Holy Grail' item - Great stuff Mr. Woofboxer.
We both learned of the 'back to front' thoery within minutes of each other as I recall at that party. I like the story very much, but what about the stitching of the label - Wouldn't it ruin the effect?

The USA military used to get it right. I think their collars on T shirts were actually more standy uppy than flat. Like mini mock turtle neck. I suspect the military wore them tight enough to grab the neck and upper body. " ooh hello sailor" .
There is an inevitable tension (small word play) between a nice loose comfy T shirt and a nice tight standy uppy collar, just peeping nicely behind the blue oxford.
Ideally one buys a good loose fitting T shirt and has ones tailor, or ones live in multi talented amanuensis, alter the actual neck opening to grip tight. (like a sailor - ooh you are naughty)
To do: insert constantly changing witty, knowing and slightly ironic literary quote or reference.

A good question, I did try the back to front trick, but it was so uncomfortable I never went any further with the experiment.

I'm with Jim, they're guaranteed not to drop, they're cheap, the fit is good. Beefy T for me.

I have done the old reverse T shirt trick to achieve that snappy elegance.
If the collar was sewn onto a more boat necked shape like a Breton shirt then the collar would stand up fine as the lateral pull^^ would keep the tension up.
Its pretty simple - a small neck opening - say dress shirt size will make the, crew, collar stand up. A larger neck opening will let it lay flat.
I reckon T shirts these days are made with a big loose neck opening for boofy necks.
I once prevailed on ms fxh,back when she adored* me, to assist me in getting a T and making the neck smaller. I t works but may not be worth the price. Just cut a vertical opening down back of collar through label area, say about 4 or 5 inches down and resew to desired sexy neck tightness. Doesn't matter - if you never wear your Ts without a shirt over like me. And even if seen isn't all that obvious.
* I mean even more than she does now.

I've been using Hema t-shirts from a local Dutch store. 2 for around 8 Euros. I'm loathed to spend good money on t's.
They are functional though, wicking away sweat in summer and are essential with white shirts if you want to avoid that nasty yellow stain under at the armpits.
