Clueless Americans

Lots to choose from. Check this latest one out - 'preppy' apparently...

Re: Clueless Americans

Looks Preppy to me. Maybe not 'Preppie' in the truest sense which can be alright but yeah, just this seasons version of Prep style, I guess.

Awful obviously but I don't think it's misrepresenting anything.

I'd also say that being American has nothing to do with anything here. Maybe they are clueless? I dunno. They seem to have nailed that look in all its garish awfulness anyway. That shows perhaps some kind of a clue. Whether it's a clue worth having is another matter.

Re: Clueless Americans

But does it look so bad? Really? I've seen many young people dress much much worse and, TBH I haven't seen too many dress better.

Too high above the waist was the badge of the hopeless nerd/engineering student.  High waters were also not cool, the right length is the right length and you either grasp it, have the eye, or you don't.

Re: Clueless Americans

I like to think of it the way some others on here do. These kids will go on and do as they do. Some will stick with the look some won't. Some will dig back and find the roots and fall in love with The Look as we know it. It takes all sorts. That being said I don't really give two hoots what these kids do... they matter not a jot to me. Also they are just models modelling a bunch of Preppy fashion fodder.

What about the image says 'clueless Americans'? That's what gets me.

Re: Clueless Americans

... and I'd agree with you Simon. There are worse dressed young folk out there. But again, so what? I don't act like my style is the 'right style' and I wouldn't expect them to act like it's the wrong style. I'd only describe them as clueless after a decent discussion with them on the matter and I'd only say they were American after I heard them admit it..... those Canadians don't like it one bit when you assume their American. TRUST ME!

Re: Clueless Americans

Clothes for sure say a lot about people, I don't know if those clothes are saying those kids are clueless. To me their clothes are saying their stable kids who take an interest in how they look. I wouldn't cross the road rather than walk between them. Now if they had hoodies on and jeans hanging round their hips I might think these look like scum and cross the road. If they were in skinny jeans, converse boots and beanies then I might think "look at the state of these tossers".  Of course that is all from how their clothes speak. Talk to each group and you might find your very wrong, or you might be right. Clothes say a lot about their wearer, I'm not getting clueless from that picture, then again they might be a gang of crackhead shoplifters for all I know.

My eyes!  I shall have to pour drain cleaner in them to erase the image.  To be fair the original Vineyard Vines shop in Martha's Vineyard is somewhat more subdued.

Re: Clueless Americans

If it wasn't for people dressing poorly how would those dressing well stand out?  And another thing worth mentioning is if 1% of Americans dressed this way I would be shocked.  The situation out in the field is much worse than you can imagine.

^Yeah, same eveywhere, the minstrel show of rap sports clothing on fatties continues, now seeping into the Netherlands. I've been here 8 years and I can honestly say you would never see a shell/track suited individual a couple of years ago, now you see them, along your seeing a noticeable underclass and dissafected immigrant youth adopting gangsta' culture. Reminds me of Blighty: the destruction of a viable working class with the creation of the chav class to piss on and blame for the ills of the oligarchy.

Re: Clueless Americans

I think one of the biggest misconceptions of pics from the boom years is that all these people wear these clothes because they spend hours and hours pondering about the right loafer or chino and then made their well-thought decision. They just bought was was around. Ah yes, and the other misconception is that about about muted colours. B&W does not really bring colours across.

Why are these clueless Americans? Like others aid, they are models or "real" kids, and I've seen much worse, really.  Lobster girl looks quite cute. The red trousers are far too tight, but a nice girl, though.

Re: Clueless Americans

They're real students (Georgetown, I think) posing as models in Tuckernuck's new clothing line. Online only at this point. A link to their shop is to be found amongst Mr. Chensvold's other adverts on his blog.

The link is actually worth following to see more of their stuff. It gives you a feel for the zeitgeist... Maybe. There's a lot of tat in there !

I'm very proud to say that this new clothing project is one which I have had no involvement in whatsoever !

So...

Yes, they are Americans. But are they clueless? I'd say that Tuckernuck were pretty clued-up on the whole - They're selling clothes to the clueless. That's got to be a nice big market. I see they've gone with youthful Preppy, but I'm sure that certain of their items will have Trad appeal - That other clueless bunch.

It's kinda Preppy colouring book stuff with a post- 'Take Ivy' tinge. One for the kiddywinks... or the young in development.

They may well do very well. A new level below J. Crew.

Now what was my theory about the progressive infantalism in the marketing of Classic American style again?

From menswear to college wear to prep school wear to... ?  What's next ?  Only the Kindergarten remains.

Had to look this up. I am more in the one syllable league.

No camel toe, as far as I can see.

Must get a lobster sweater now.

The British must be equally as clueless. This lot could easily be from the suburbs of Henley-on-Thames or anyone of them affluent places SW of the Thames that are overrun with rugger bugger toffs..

Jack Willis, Abercrombie, Hollister are all part of the block party round there instead..

Absolutely correct. Clueless Brits isn't a genre, it's a whole nation!

Clueless to what though, if we're talking about Ivy then surely that's most of the population of the planet?

Clue or not, we all surely would agree that at least Tucks would make the old colour-wheel turning like crazy.

"Tuckernuck". I like that. You can make a lot of nonsense out of that.

Re: Clueless Americans

I think that these clothes are cheaply and poorly made and also overpriced. I find their styling obvious and garish with every corner cut in their manufacture to turn a buck.

They ought to do well.

The clueless need clothes too.

Turnabuck's look can be got cheaper & better elsewhere. I can see no point in their existence. Apart from cashing in on the Div market...

Re: Clueless Americans

Each 'block' colour in the pic above is also wrong - They haven't even got the basic Pantone palette right.

How it's called when you only tuck in parts of your shirt? The "Suckertuck"? Invented on Tuckerpuck? Seen often on the back of the Suckertruck.
