I was hoping that Baz Lurhmann was not going to destroy the Great Gatsby but I knew it was going to be one of his big flops, irregardless of the box office takings. If the music in the trailer is representative of the film, he has got the music completely wrong! It was the Charleston, jazz and to a lesser extent the Blues which were at the forefront of the music of the period, NOT swing! Others can comment about the fashions, but New York looks far to clean for the time as well. My head is in my hands about if the music. It is just easy too get right and it would appear he failed at it.
I liked ballroom. And I thought romeo and Juliet very good. Australia was embarrassing in the extreme. Moulin rouge incomprehensible. And the tourism ads silly. I'd not expect he'd do gatsby any good.
I noticed on the trailer to the Rum Diary it had hip-hop, then I was a bit taken by the music choice for this trailer, I think it is just the marketing men fucking it up, whilst they think they do a good job reading current trends.
Fuck em, it is rare to get a good film nowadays, people's delusions run right into the heart of the creative community, where are the free thinkers? I can't even remember the last good film I saw from this or the last decade, documentaries seem to be very good at the moment though.

Film is dead, we live in a post-celluloid world. It's all digital 3D trickery from here on in.
I've just watched the trailor and looks like a Moulin Rouge part II. A bit of visual fantasy.
One thing that is seriously wrong is the wrist watch that Di Caprio is wearing, humungus! Wrist watches of the period were extremely small as a reaction to the size of pocket watches and demonstrate the watch makers art.
Like the tiny mobile phones of the early 00's, I hope film makers of the future remember that.
It turns out that Toby Macguire's jacket was darted in the Great Gatsby, So much for Brooks Brothers accuracy. See the third slide.

Something i notced when i watched Boardwalk empire is how many of the suits were darted. Even those with the natural shoulder often had darts. Was this common in America in the 20's or is it really just the contemporary costume departments take on things?
Look at Dempsey's suits or anyone buying from BB at the time and you will see darts.
I actually think i prefer the 20's Brooks Style to the 50's
I see that Mr. Dan Geddes wants my opinion on a Blazer in this film from my morning peep at Ivy-Sty. How right he is to consult a menswear professional who actually works in the industry & not to just sit & listen to the chatter on the Net. !
As an old friend to me who has been of much use in the building up of the 'Russell brand I'll cut him a 'Mates Rates' deal. I hope that PayPal will be OK for him.
Dan - Contact me in whatever way you like to fix a price and I'll happily give you all you ask for. I've seen the Blazer in the still provided and noted the shoulder, lapel, gorge, buttoning stance, and can fit it into the the story of Ivy for you very well.
For a slightly higher fee I'll provide photos comparing the reality of Gatsby's era with what I believe to be the more recent inspiration for the jacket's styling.
For free I will tell you that it's a theatrical costume that the actor is wearing. But even you would know that, Dan.

Indeed. They were very common. Beyond the Brooks No. 1 suit there were many others.
Did you watch Boardwalk Empire, Bopster?
If so, What did you think of the wardrobe? Did it work in your opinion?
I loved your Dempsey thread. It might be worth bumping if you can remember what it was called.
I haven't seen it or know enough about the time to say really L.
I wish this was in colour, you can imagine Jack's tie and p/s were probably quite gaudy with those patterns and colours. Again I think this is getting on for late 20's/ early 30's. ???

Worth a read L, John Dunn did the costumes for the show...

They look more like side darts that front darts.
I give up...

Agreed, but additional to the side seam. A very common dodge - Dart it, but hide it under the arm.
All the shaping could be done in the side seam...
Choices, choices.

I tried to dig up Bop's Dempsey thread but most of the images have been removed/are unavailable now. This is a real shame as I seem to remember a lot of shots of the young boxer in the early 20's wearing natural shouldered but very much darted and waisted jackets. It looked very American in its way. It also looked European and British and very dandy. It all looked great actually.
I'll see if i can dig up some tonight for you Gizzer. Maybe we'll get a wee smile out of you.

Unhappily, it turns out that the pissant Mr. Dan Geddes has no money. Maybe that's his bond with the pissant Mr. Christian Chensvold?
Still... Let them enjoy their amauture opinions on Ivy together. You can't put a price on that. Even if Chensvold does try to present his amaturism as a form of professionalism by selling adverts on the internet around it...![]()
I've put an order in at Tailor Caid!
I think if Claudio did my size I would be buying more into this look at the moment for smart clothing.
Not the shirt mind.
