Get hip to the "real" bass loafers; an oft forgotten reminder in today's plastic penny land of why the weejuns came to define cool:

Re: Ebay alert

@ Woolster - yeah, those prices are bonkers. I had actually seen the Gant polo myself but I had wondered if it was genuine vintage. Up till now I had never seen a *vintage* Gant polo with that kind of label on it, stating "Gant Shirtmakers". I thought that maybe it was a modern shirt from the Yale Coop Campus Store line. I guess you learn something new every day.

Yes, I thought so too at first, so I searched around a bit but I think they've only reissued button-downs for the yale co-op collection thus far. The polo looks like something from the preppy era, but could be 60s too… hard to tell without seeing it close. The white label gradually disappeared during the 70s, but maybe the Co-op kept it for a while longer, I dunno.

I think it's the hipster appeal of the Rugger range that has pushed up the prices of vintage Gant, although I have a feeling this one (maybe even both) ended up in the Bastin/Gant archives.

Re: Ebay alert

There are two really nice brooks poplin summer suits on ebay right now in a rare 37s - both listed for a reasonable BIN price.  I would be all over them except the measurements are a bit big for me and frankly I already own enough clothes that fit a bit loose.  I hope someone here can benefit - if anyone needs links pm me.

...speaking of rare Gant, I wonder what's the deal with this shirt?

http://www.ebay.com/itm/VTG-GANT-SPORT- … 4ab7d7663d

Anyone seen Gant Sportmakers before? A google search brings up a few hits, one to the New Yorker, so they were around in the 70s, but were they a Gant offshoot or just someone trying to cash in a bit too late. Counterfeit Ivy?

Hmmm a shirt collar that practically requires a tie on a shirt body that practically doesn't.

I've seen a batik tab collar. It was kind of awesome. But what tie?

Re: Ebay alert

Something a bit different, anyone either considered a french workers jacket? Striped (for that pyjamas vibe)or navy blue. Not too far from a slack jacket, I suppose, even more casual (fwiw I don't think I would, but someone might)

Re: Ebay alert

I have a french workers jacket - one of the blue ones Bill Cunningham always wears.  Fly fronted with a small collar.  I love it, very casual workwear vibe.

Papillion. Penal colony Ivy!

It's a bit like the "Ice Cream" Jackets favoured by Mods around '64.

Re: Ebay alert

I love it. I'd wear it for sure.

I remember summer holidays in Ibiza when I kid and there was always this one old local guy who used to walk up and down the sea front every evening talking to people. He would wear a workers jacket in I guess a chambray with a collarless white shirt underneath and some pretty baggy cotton pants. I think maybe very plain white plimsolls too. That guy was cool as hell. A good look for Summer in Europe. Especially if you are a bazillion years old.

Do you know of any pictures of Mods in these ice cream jackets? I know the sort of jackets you mean and I've heard the term but I don't think I've ever actually seen one worn.

A white horse walks into a pub and asks for a whisky.

The barman says 'We have a whisky named after you.'

The horse replies 'What?  A whisky called  Eric?'

It's bloody hard work, I tell you, so I think it's only fair that I should get paid for this.
