Re: Aloha shirts

I'm narrowed down to two shirts these days.

Re: Aloha shirts

Always a treat when they arrive by post - especially if directly from Hawaii.

I've said it before, but they are like ties in that you could look at a hundred before finding one you like.

I like prints with human figures (especially Hawaiian maidens), planes and ships, landscapes, and anything with pineapples. As nice as the rayon ones are, I've never been too bothered about material - many cotton and even polyester shirts are things of beauty. Another thing that appeals to me is the hokey 1950s-style construction of many Hawaiian shirts.

Makers above include Hilo Hattie, Reyn Spooner, Iolani, Kai Nani, Kahala, Kalaheo, RJC, Diamond Head, and a couple I forget.

Re: Aloha shirts

Very handsome indeed. Some of my favourites are vintage replicas, originals of the 30s to 50s are out of my financial range!

Re: Aloha shirts

I was wearing Hawaiian shirt yesterday and one today public holiday. Always says holiday or BBQ to me and beer. And I like to sing.....

Well, I packed my bags and bought myself a ticket
For the land of the tall palm tree.
Aloha ol’ Milwaukee,
Hello Waikiki
I just stepped down from the airplane
When I heard her say.
“Wacka Wacka, nuka, licka
Wacka Wacka nuka licka
Would you like a ……Lay

Hey, Let’s talk dirty in Hawaiian
Whisper in my ear
Kicka puka maka waawaa heenee
Are the words I long to hear
Lay your coconut on my tiki
Whata hecka mooka mooka dear.
Let’s talk dirty in Hawaiian
Say the words I long to hear.

You should be able to turn up a Reyn Spooner reverse-print popover online easily enough (although that is a fine example - most originals are more subdued). They run very large compared to other shirts.

The Hope/Tozian book is a great read with stunning photography. Lots of history, interviews, and even pages on the minutiae of coconut buttons.
