Filson 256/257

Does anyone own one?

I'm thinking of picking one up in otter green, specifically to use in Japan to lug around our iPad, MiFi, extra battery, camera, cell phones, maps, hotel keys, book, and extra layers for 5 weeks. I don't normally carry a bag and have yet to find anything else that I wouldn't be embarassed about draping over my shoulder.

My number one question is whether it's a comfortable bag to carry around for 5+ hours daily while travelling... I've read that the shoulder strap is kind of dodgy and the fabric is pretty rigid. It's my biggest concern because I'll be relying on it for everything and taking it everywhere.

I'm actually thinking of grabbing this already broken in bag off Etsy because it looks a lot softer and I like the worn in canvas cloth. I'm betting the materials and construction were probably a lot sturdier and of higher-quality 20 years ago...

https://www.etsy.com/listing/181467141/vintage-filson-257-briefcase-bag

I'm also trying to guage the available space, as we'll be forwarding our luggage between hotels and packing lightly for train travel, which means that I'll need to be able to stuff an overnight change of clothes and toiletires inside to use like a small weekender bag. Does anyone know if the 257 model should be able to *comfortably* hold all of the above mentioned items plus a couple of shirts, sweater, socks, underwear, and a dopp kitt? We'll be without luggage for 1-2 nights when forwarding our bags so I'm hoping that this "briefcase" is a good solution for packing lightly.

Just hoping to get some thoughts and feedback from others before pulling the trigger as it's a pretty steep price tag. If anyone has other suggestions for similar sized, practical and casually smart looking bags - please sound off!

I've also been considering a small Filson duffle but I think that may be too big and awkward for daily use. If anyone uses a 256/257, could you please let me know if you find it comfortable, light/heavy, roomy enough for practical storage, and if you'd rely on it for extended travelling?

Also what are your thoughts on new versus vintage in terms of comfort and durability- advantage or disadvantage?

If I were in need of such a bag, my first stop would be the army/navy surplus store near my house.  They've got an entire section of canvas bags in every shape, size, and pocket configuration imaginable.  Not to mention, you'd be looking at like $20 - $60 as opposed to $400.  That's where I picked up my trusty over-the-shoulder college satchel that served me well for years.

There seem to be endless websites selling the stuff too.  This is the selection from the first one that came up in google.

Re: Filson 256/257

The thing about army surplus is that I want something casually resembling a briefcase with handles (and shoulder strap) that would serve me well in the city too. Something with appropriate compartments for papers and documents like a briefcase, a space for an iPad, boosk, etc. I doubt those proletarian military bags would be as practical and aesthetically they're a bit too backwoods sportsman or regimental looking. I wouldn't pay the full asking in that listing btw, a brand new Filson goes for around $350 which is about what I'd be willing to cap on.

I don't own one but they're lovely looking bags. I have a Barbour Tarras http://www.cloggs.co.uk/invt/81326601?gclid=CKyGzI_h4L0CFekBwwod7zkA6w that I carry when on holiday or out and about. The thing is a tardis.

I like that Barbour a lot but still prefer the plainness of the Filson. Tan coloured canvas is a bit too Jack Hanna safari themed for me, haha. smile

I think I'm gonna buy the Filson... trying to decide between a stiff new bag or worn in vintage.

Re: Filson 256/257

Oliver do yourself a favor and buy your Filson brand new. If anything, the materials on the new bags are even better than before. This things are built to last and guaranteed for life. If you can wait till June get it at 40% from Brooks Brothers at their Fathers Day sale.

While the 256 is great ( i have it!) I would suggest you also look at the medium field bag, as it may be more versatile for your purposes.

The straps are great and they will break in nicely and are pure quality. Don't listen to the internet boys complaning about the leather straps - this is how a strap should be they are not used to real leather goods.

As for me - all I can say is that few people travel with more frequancy than me and my luggage needs to wistand the elements and look proper at all occasions.

Oliver - I found some photos on the 'Ask Andy' forum of the 256/257/258 which may be useful:

Re: Filson 256/257

Thanks for the advice, Jose - I'm sold on it!

What makes the new materials better than the old? That's pretty exceptional for the old US catalog outfitters like Filson, Orvis, Bean, etc. It's usually all about brand cheapening and outsourcing. Kudos to Filson if that's not the case though!

I'm not wild about the look of the field bag to be honest, but I did consider the small 220 model duffel. I like that a lot but I'm not sure it'd be as practical as the 257. Do you think the briefcase might be a bit tight for the intended purpose? Also how lightweight is your 256?

I wonder if I should reconsider and just opt for the small duffel bag as a carry-on and for train travel and not carry around as much during the day...

Re: Filson 256/257

Filson never skimps on materials - remeber this stuff is really guaranteed for life. If anything happens to your bags (10 or 20 years down the line) Filson will give you the choice of a new bag or they will repait your old bag. Needeless to say, they only want to use the best materails and assembly or they would go bankrupt doing free repairs.

The bags are not uncomfortable but you can hang the bag from its strap with stuff inside to make the strap softer - the 256 is good but it wont hold layers - the 257 is roomier but its a bit heavier.

They just came out with a new bag last week that fit your needs to a T

Check it on the Filson site its a combo of a 256 with extra room for layers.
The filson site will give you 10% off of your first purchase and free delivery so thats something to consider.
The brooks sale is pretty sweet but you gotta mive quick as everyone - me included - is waiting to pounce. The other good thing about Brooks is easy returns. The otter green will age very nicely - my otter green bags recieve constant compliments at airports, hotels, on the street and the office.

Re: Filson 256/257

Thanks Jose, I'm gonna recommend you for a sales comission!

Do you know the model number of the new bag by chance?

Brooks has a pretty tasty looking "olive" color that seems to be an exclusive. I think my BB card gives me an automatic 10-15% so it's probably got an edge over the new customer discount at Filson. It technically wouldn't be a first purchase anyhow as I've bought some cold weather gear from their catalog before.

Did your otter green look solid right out of the box or did it take a couple of months of wear?

Re: Filson 256/257

Edit: I just poked around the site and I think you're referring to the "72 Hour Briefcase" which actually isn't so hot because despite the added space and pockets, the dimensions are actually a full 1/2" in width and 2" in depth smaller than the 257. It's also got a cheap and uncomfortable (and ugly!) looking nylon webbing strap... so I'm also certainly gonna jump on the 257. Based on the Ask Andy thread linked above with photos, it looks like it should do the trick. I see plenty of space for a couple of efficiently folded ocbd's and underwear! smile

Re: Filson 256/257

257 is a classic. Their new models are hit or miss. The otter green looked good but sun exposure and wear makes them look great. I hope it works out for you, as they are great little bags that only get better over time.

Thanks Jose, I've always been pretty indifferent to this sort of thing but I'm really eager to get this bag now!

This is a great blog entry btw, in case anyone else is interested:

Re: Filson 256/257

Hi Oliver,
I have a 257 since a couple of years and use it everyday to go to my office and on short 24 hours trips. Fabric is rather rigid and the strap is not very soft on the shoulder (I actually don't use it), but it is a great bag and very versatile. It's perfect for my 11" macbook with a lot of other stuff.
A note about the "vintage" one you linked in the first post. I'm not so sure it's a vintage one as it looks exactly as the new but distressed 257 that exists since a couple of years, these are new bags that are water washed to be distressed in this way. I know it because they are officially made by the italian filson distributor that happens to be located very close to where I live and I talked with them about it. I was thinking to buy it too, but when I saw it in real life I decided to go for the "new" one. One day I can always wash it in a wash machine to make it like the distressed one without paying the premium price. Just my 2 cents.

P.S. Oliver please contact me asap by pm or email. Thanks

I like the Duluth Trading stuff. I have the Bashful Billionaires briefcase for  a fair few years. Suits me well. When travelling overseas I just schlep around with extremely practical cheap and cheerful robust stuff. In fact last few times have got it down to just cabin carry on luggage.
