Re: Unexpected Ivy in movies

At the moment I am watching "Wargames" with my students... Matthew Broderick, you know smile

5 minutes and I've seen two Ivy outfits - "Mr. Mc Kittrick", looks like mainly Brooks Brothers to me - classic flapped patch pocket sports sack coat, slim tartan tie, Tattersall (?) BD, sweater vest, no break cuffed flannel trousers... and some second guy in a 3-piece sack suit with OCBD and repp tie...

Oh, and a teacher, 3rd outfit: repp tie, 3/2 roll sports coat similar o McKittricks, OCBD, cardigan... and no break flannels smile

Ah...  I get it.  Keep a vigilante eye out to make sure there's no inappropriate groping going on in the dark.

I was rewatching Advise & Consent this morning... 2 hours and 20 minutes of wonderful shapeless 3/2 sack suits!

Re: Unexpected Ivy in movies

actually he's a gray-haired middle-aged clothing enthusiast in black-and-white saddle shoes, vintage repro circular knit sweatshirt, and tapered Bedford cords ... they are looking at him strangely ... the pensive one in front wears a plain-collar pink oxford pullover with rounded hem and white jeans ... his little white booties fail to pass Ivy muster as does his incipient Anton Chigourh haircut ..... in the center is a girl with nice Princeton thigh socks, which have always been a "thing" there, and vacant eyes ... she clings to a kid whose fashion sense is 100% evil sensei from the Karate Kid ... one other kid shows a bit of promise with his surf-striped t-shirt but he is confusing highwaters with no-breaks ... all the little punkettes are cute, especially the one in the stirrup leggings .....

Re: Unexpected Ivy in movies

At least the clothes kept you riveted.  How was Harry James sounding?  Big and brassy?  Cheesy arranging?  Decent female eye candy I'm sure.

Re: Unexpected Ivy in movies

It wasn't good enough to be riveting but when the boom years Jerry Lewis flicks come on I do check in on them because good clothing does appear now and then ....

I kept waiting for something good to come up like the Jack Purcells and rust-colored Harrington that he wore in 1963's Who's Minding the Store?, which was on a month or two ago.

Can't make a clear case for Jerry as an all-time hero of Ivy because he mixes in a lot of louche Jivey stuff but he does have his Ivy moments, clothes-wise.

Re: Unexpected Ivy in movies

Since I was a kid I loved the story how Jerry Lewis put on a brand new pair of socks each day and refused to wash and wear used socks. Seemed to me as a kid to be the epitome of having wealth and being to indulge idiosyncrasies. Like changing into a fresh shirt after lunch. I have done that occasionally at work in summer. Feels refined or something.

Re: Unexpected Ivy in movies

You don't see those Jerry Lewis (and Deano) movies anymore in the UK or Europe. They're great films IMCO.

Same with some the Elvis musicals - preppy Ivy style before the book was even written.

Re: Unexpected Ivy in movies

^ hep, most of the Jerry and Deano movies are on CANAL+ movie channels quite regularly and the joy of digital tv these days you can even select the english soundtrack versions ( at least once a year there's Jerry Lewis marathon on there a full weekend of the little fella ).

The Elvis movies are a different matter as their broadcast rights are all over the place - but the BBC4 is currently trying to put together a bunch for an Elvis season with documentaries.
