The continuing saga of the LVC 519 'bedford cord' 5-pockets

So another 'season' (AW-2014) and another batch of 519 bedfords from LVC in - 'Fog', Blue, a caramel/brown and black - all with a 'LEVI'S' capital 'E' red tab on the back pocket (historically incorrect for the jeans they claim to be based on).
Got a chance to compare them with last seasons (the shop still had stock) and a pair from 3 years ago ( I wore my pair to the shop) and I took my own tape-measure.

The current crop have a higher rise than last season (almost 3/4" on the 33W and about 1/2" on the 30W) but not quite up with the original re-issue measurements.
The back 'western yoke' is deeper on the new ones by almost 1/2" (again on the 33W and 30W).
The taper appears the same as the original reissue (9-1/2" at the knee down to 7-1/2" hem on the 33W)
As ever tho' it's a definite 'try before you buy' because the fog and black are the same colour as last seasons offerings and some retailers may be selling last seasons as the new season.

There's also a regular corduroy in the range with a 'Levi's' small 'e' white tab called the '1975-519' ,
these have a similar front rise to the 60's version but are a very square cut (closer in shape at the waist to the orange tab 606) and therefore seem to sit lower on the waist
and the leg taper is not quite there (adding an inch at the knee and nearly an inch at the hem).

There's a new 'trucker jacket' in bedford cord that looks good and a shawl collar suedette jacket that may tickle the fancy for a few members.

The 1975 - 519 caught my attention, but from your description sound pretty grim?

you have to wonder why they keep buggering about with the cut - the mind boggles.

^ LVC now claim that the 'icons' range of products are 'inspired by' rather than reproductions of vintage Levis products,
as opposed to their 501-repro range (which they daren't piss about with to avoid annoying the 'selvedge-heads').

Re: The continuing saga of the LVC 519 'bedford cord' 5-pockets

^ the 47s are very accurate,
the slimmer fit is why the late 40s originals were so highly sought after by collectors as they had a relatively 'modern' fit and could be sold on for very big-bucks.

I keep going between thinking the LVCs are an investment and just too much to justify,  I've been looking around ebay and sales and even keeping an eye out vintage wise,  but no luck yet?  I know Yellow Rat do a decent alternative, does anyone know anything bout the John Simons one's since those were on sale at £75?

Re: The continuing saga of the LVC 519 'bedford cord' 5-pockets

^Tommy you might get lucky with the seller 'AmateursandProfesionals' on ebay. They usually have LVC stock at not 'nosebleed' prices.

I'd describe the JS 5 pockets as being closer in style to 501's straight leg  rather than the 519s tapered leg.
They are nice tho' and the navy version is a very versatile colour.

I've been lucky and picked up my LVC 519's at around half the retail price in the sales not long after they first appeared (fearing they might disappear from the range I bought a few pair),
and I have a couple of pair of vintage that I found mis-described on t'bay ( the obviously tapered leg described as "early Levis bell bottoms" by the seller) and as a result paid less than $10 each, so it can be worth scouring the online auctioneers and Etsy.

Aggravates me to no end that I trashed my original 519s and can't find a decent replacement. I'm seriously hoping that they'll turn up in Japan but it's completely stupid the way they keep messing with the cut. They nailed it with the original bedford cords 3 years ago. Wish I still had those

Fantastic info!! I'm adding all of these to my notes and will keep a keen eye out. I'm especially hoping to find a pair or three of these repro buckle-back Leesures, if they're still in circulation:

^ oooh now they are tasty those Leesures,
VanJac have good value (about $95 at current exchange rates) cotton twill buckle-backs that may also be worth considering as a fallback if the Leesures don't pan out...

Agree, those Leesure look sweet - Somewhere on here is a thread with the repro McQueen lee cords, a store called Marunouchi Lipsett, might be worth trying to find too?

Found it.: http://forums.filmnoirbuff.com/viewtopic.php?id=13301

Thanks for the advice,  Acton.  I have been looking for lvc at a good price but the problem is I' m a 33/34w and at most a 30 l. Can't find them reduced in this size.

http://www.alexandersoflondon.com/ found these mentioned in a previous lvc thread, prices seem almost too good to be true? Anyone who tried them able to give me any feedback?

Re: The continuing saga of the LVC 519 'bedford cord' 5-pockets

Someone on here highly praised their cords — can't remember who now. I only tried the drill cotton 'jeans', but I've not been impressed with them.

The top button fell off after a few months, the custom colour was way off the swatch, and the material bags out at the knees almost as soon as you put them on after a wash. I've practically demoted them to DIY trousers now.

Re: The continuing saga of the LVC 519 'bedford cord' 5-pockets

Tommy,
I've found them very hit or miss, it's bottom end of the high-street quality but you can approximate the cut you want.
I had great success, styling wise, copying a pair of 519s and 501s but the material and finish is poor.

Lux-ire may be a better option ( a little more expensive ) but I've seen great results and I'm about to order some cords from them myself.

I'll most certainly BIG UP Amateurs & professionals here peeps....or their other persona...STYLECREEP...

Sam's a Top Fella there and I've bought bucketloads off him in the past coupla years...he basically sweeps up on all the LVC stuff that's lying around so certainly a good call for you Bedford Heads trying to find yer poifect fit - a right pain in the arse no doubt if they be meddlin' with the fit!

You can pop there in person if you can get to Brentford...and am sure he'd be happy to rummage through his stock..he sure has a shitload of Levi's...

He'll be doing Dickies shortly too and got in some Ben Davis for any workwear heads among you...AND...

He's going to be getting Goodwear in....next Spring I think..

Did I have a hand in this you may ask?

^ A hot tip Captain, it's where I bulk bought the original stone coloured 519 re-issues (with the 'baseball' sew-on patch in the back pocket).
Great service and only a short bus ride from me smile

Re: The continuing saga of the LVC 519 'bedford cord' 5-pockets

Sorry to hear that Tommy...but chin up Sir...summat will turn up...

These do come up short mind in the leg...if you've not tried them?

I've not worn mine at all this Summer sadly... having leapt back into Ben's/Dickies big style these feel way too slim for me currently...
I also used to wear mine with loafers...another item i've not worn in an age...

Still - as I always say....it'll all come round for me again God willing...

Re: The continuing saga of the LVC 519 'bedford cord' 5-pockets

Picked up a pair of the LVC White Levis Californians bedford cords in the clearance section for $74 (£46) in blue mirage, decent rise, much slimmer on that I expected so very happy with that, for those of you who cycle, they had the 511 commuter for the obscene price of $14.99 in the clearance too ok they were the less than desirable colours, but for a decent cycling pant a great price, grabbed an orange pair for myself.
