So boss to hear that this project is making some strides. I'm guessing that will see it around next year, yes?

Re: 'The Neat Offensive' John Simons Film Update -

Much activity on this project since my last update.

NEAT is the word - Be it an untucked, unironed buttondown or your finest Grey Flannel 3 piece number - The sensibility is the thing.

And 'Ivy', for all the hype and marketing, is just the same.

It's a look, and a vibe, and a style.  Just like aspects of the best Jazz.

Not much more.

?

I mean how much of a story is really there? I felt it was enough to fill out the Jewish Book talk perfectly.. are we just going to get that revised with better filming?

If I was looking at this project Id tag JS on to the bigger story of Modernists during the 50s and 60s pull from a much larger pool, something closer to the Original Modernists FB page and incorporate a lot more to flesh it out.

Also I thought a certain someone had been banished from the kingdom? Is Gollum back now?

They're obviously making it pay-as-you-go, makes sense, I'm looking forward to it.

I am looking forward to seeing it too and certainly hope it does get off the ground..

I do see Bops point though and cant understand why we have yet another "the neat offensive thread" to basically tell us nothing......neat!

Do we need a thread to remind us that the project still exists ?

The interviews they did will be 2/3 years old by the time this one sees the light of day! Some of us might even have croaked by then…

Ahhhhhh -  But it's all expanded so nicely. There has been much more added from the original pilot... New filming, additional re-filming...

The story is actually huge, yet still keeping the JS focus.

JS is the anchor, but the ship keeps bobbing in all sorts of fascinating directions.

Re: 'The Neat Offensive' John Simons Film Update -

So the already quite Mod heavy trailer youve put together is just a ruse then?

Again genius

Re: 'The Neat Offensive' John Simons Film Update -

John Simons bases his worldview around modernism - progressions in modern jazz in particular. He started serious retailing in '64 at the precise moment the mod thing crossed over into the mainstream, thus his version of 'Ivy League', beautifully selected and displayed ("curated" in modern, fashionable lingo), was swallowed up with much relish by the growing mod market - "overnight success" I think John called The Ivy Shop. But by the mid-60s pop and soul music had pushed jazz to the sidelines and this new generation were much less rooted in the values JS had grown up with. The guys working in his shops tended to be older and be pretty heavy jazz-heads who were connected to an older, more understated version of what the American look was all about. Thus John has often found himself in the position of being slightly out-of-sync with the tastes of a large proportion of his customers, both musically and, on some aspects of the look, sartorially. I'd also make the point that the use of the term 'modernist' in relation to men's clothing is dubious and, as far as I'm aware, has no serious academic research to back it up. Modernism in the visual arts, in architecture, in literature, in the world of creativity yes, but I think the way clothes are made and worn has rarely owed much to the central ideas of modernism, which was a specific cultural movement based on a complete rejection of the values of the past which had made the carnage of WW1 possible, infused with a strong interest in revolutionary politics and a new world order based around a completely new set of progressive values. The Ivy wardrobe was a fusion of traditional European aristocratic dress codes with softer, sportier clothing. It was a 20th century hybrid look but it wasn't related to what modernism was about. Just my tuppence… Feeling chatty today, and can't focus on my work emails. Nice to see Incognito back. Say what you like about him, and he's got under my skin over the years, he livens this place out of its torpidity.

The thing is AC you can really pick out the 1920s American Modernism in Ivy and the mens clothes of the jazz age...Id say it was heavily influenced in that period...case in point most older blokes were still dressed in their morning suits..

Re: 'The Neat Offensive' John Simons Film Update -

Just to throw another kitten into the canal with a brick tied around its neck -

The Richmond Ivy Shop was known as a "Skinhead" shop for ages.

Ivy Ian liked this not.

The Man From Acrilia talks great sense.

The first Neat Offensive trailer is JS heavy. Is it "Mod" heavy ?   Why not "Skinhead" heavy ?

Certainly it aims towards Modernism.

"Harry Stedman", the man not the brand, seems to have been a fine fellow.  What I'd do if my son took my name and monkeyed with it like his did I do not know....

But I'm sure I'd be after a really fat percentage of the take.

Ownership of JS's work is an interesting subject - Many wish to claim it or equally reject it.
Who made him the most money out of all of his diverse customers?
"Mods" ?
"Skinheads"  ?
... It may well have been Graphic Designers and neat young men in publishing...
