Re: The Golden Age Myth

See, coat and tie means well-dressed to some.
In terms of formality, presentation, and accessorization, much has been lost.  Some due to modern heating and transportation, some to cheapness and declining social mores.

Re: The Golden Age Myth

There is certainly plenty of mythology about on clothing interest websites that's for sure.

The picture you have used looks as though it was from the early part of the last century when a lot of men just had the one suit that they wore day in day out and it did for everything. The period a lot of us on here are fond of is the 1950s. A time when people were relatively affluent and had started to have clothing for different uses e.g. work/leisure but conventions still dictated certain standards of smartness and style.

Well, yes.  "...attitude becomes an unexamined and ingrained habit."
The hobo put on a coat and hat and all because it was just what was done.
Now, fleece pullovers and stupid ankle socks are what is done.

Re: The Golden Age Myth

Well, I got that.  Idealizing a bygone era is fun and entertaining, and it is fraught with peril.  While I might get really enthusiastic about the aspects I like, I never fail to look at the past with a critical eye as well; to do otherwise would be irresponsible.

I'm watching this thread, but can't think of anything to say yet. Hard as that is to believe...wink

Re: The Golden Age Myth

Clearly there are golden ages for all those who take an interest in reproducing bygone styles or even keeping alive styles which were once mainstream, but are  now marginal and hobbyist.

For those merely concerned with dressing well, such reservoirs of appropriate style are less important unless one habitually pins posters of Brummel and the  Prince of Wales next to one's bed.

Re: The Golden Age Myth

I actually wouldn't recommend anyone take street drugs these days, particularly the ecstasy varieties.

But MDMA definitely has its medical uses as you state.

Re: The Golden Age Myth

Well depends.
From a WW-II perspective the before of the war years could seem a "Golden Age".
20s could seems a golden age in the middle of great depression.
Belle epoque 1890-1913 could seem a golden age in the post great war world.
Today in a Italy in crisis, 50s and early 60s are considered a golden age.
For Ivy league fans "boom years are the golden age,for tailored clothes lovers 30s are the true golden age.
So,choose you personal "golden age" (my is  1949-1966),and dream.
