Re: Stuff You Probably Wouldn't Buy Again

I'm steering clear of modern Pendleton stuff. I'd like to think some of their stuff (like the board shirt) is still functional unlike the disappointing sport coat I have from them but I'm not taking any chances when the prices are so high. They seem to lose their value? $200 for a new Topster in the catalogue, while I spent less than $20 (shipping included) on mine, which has the gorgeous clover lapels and doesn't even have moth holes. If you're patient and not overly picky about the exact style of plaid, $20 can get you just about any style of Pendleton shirt on Ebay. Bump that number up to $50 and you have a massive variety from which to choose.

I'm never buying a V-neck tee shirt again. I got a pack once when I was still undecided on the best approach to under garments. I tried V-necks, crew necks, and I tried going without an undershirt at all. I've settled on crewneck so once the few V-necks I have left wear out, they will be replaced with crews.

A point I sometimes make about threads concerning people's sh*t lists is that almost everything you like will eventually come up as disliked or proscribed. This revived thread though really takes the cake: At the moment I happen to be wearing a pair of Bill's Khakis and a Mercer tattersall flannel shirt over a V-neck undershirt!

BB non iron shirt. The shirt felt like cardboard on my skin. I hated it when it came up in the rotation and i wound up giving it away to charity. I also agree on the BB argyle socks. First they lost shape and then they wore out prematurely.

Cashmere sweaters. I bought one thinking the girlfriend would appreciate the softness. As soon as I put it on I despised it and myself.

My Bean boots get worn less than once a year, so I can't imagine I'll ever buy another pair.

A new Barracuta G4 or G9, they've royally 'f***ed' them up by messing with the styling and the fabric.

Wasn't keen on the shoulders on my JPress donegal mist tweed and it went to Mr JS, other than that it was a great jacket.

As much as I kind of hate to say it, probably anything from Brooks unless they really change their game.

Re: Stuff You Probably Wouldn't Buy Again

I revise my stance a bit in light of Stan's astute reckoning.  I would maybe place an order for shoes or the occasional odd and end.  I was thinking mainly in terms of clothing when I stated I wouldn't buy.

/\  nah WM, these other things that are the remnants of the once-vast booty of Les Brers are all afterthought makeweights ....

what you say about their current clothing has got to stand

we all grew up on it but it doesn't please me any longer ....

but the shoe department is still a reason to check in

the place carries some nice Red Wings, Filson, Alden, and Rancourt .....

we'll go to our graves grumbling about Brooks and Bean and how these companies sold us out .......

Re: Stuff You Probably Wouldn't Buy Again

I had a really bad experience with BB recently. I bought this jacket:

http://www.brooksbrothers.com/Fitzgerald-Fit-Check-Sport-Coat/MM00386,default,pd.html?dwvar_MM00386_Color=BRWN&contentpos=12&cgid=0217

The second time I wore it I noticed that the lower right pocket had come unstitched at the bottom. Obviously, this should not happen so soon.

What's really bad is that it is that pocket that I threw my apartment keys in, and I did not notice the hole in the pocket until I was steps from the entrance door to my building. The keys slipped out somewhere between Rector Street and my place in Brooklyn.

Like Stan I still like their pajamas, scarves, ties, and some other things. I'm sure they'll either stitch the jacket or give me another, but I am soured. I took a chance and ignored the laments of others about their decline in quality clothing. I lost.

Re: Stuff You Probably Wouldn't Buy Again

I went to the Regent St. branch recently and rather reluctantly paid £115 for a US made OCBD.  Overpriced, but anything from the US would sting me with customs and VAT and handling charge.  The staff were as clueless as ever, ignorant of the existence of US made stock until I found said shirt and pointed out the different label and difference in price etc.

Re: Stuff You Probably Wouldn't Buy Again

I'll add, I am happy with the Brooks 1818 patch pocket sack blazer I bought from Oliver.  I didn't pay anywhere near full price however.
