Re: Quality of Crepes

Ok. Spent a little time investigating chaussure. That's French for footwear aparently.

Boulay-Lasserre were based at 18 Rue d'Antibes, Cannes. Could only find 4 French articles about them. My French is terrible so as best as i can work out with google translate they had an advert for out of season shoes at great prices in 1909, posted their trade price or something around 1928/29 and sponsored some botanical bloke again in 1928. Then nothing.

Today 18 Rue d'Antibes is an Eden Shoes shop.

hello: iam new in this page,i like a lot the way you people talk about the topic of the original playboy shoes, very interesting and the many brand that use this style of shoes.in my teen years I used to live in NYC,Brooklyn,Bergen st.by that time I used the one that had a British flagg as logo inside(a piece of cloth) I wear a chukkas brown leather, and a lows two tone black and yellow.recently I found a pair on ebay purchased at 60.00 british pound.they are old circa 60s. the sole was hard as rock but I used a blower and heat them for couple minutes and like magic the sole turn soft like new.the brand is TIMPSON FINE SHOES OF U.K.. They are brown brogue leather uk size8 they just look that the old ones I used in my teen years. in my next post I will send photos

Saw them at the trade show end of last year - sorry, not a fan - they had some ok bits though, just a shame about the horrible leather on most of it.

Sound interesting Las Latas, found a pair of vintage Hutton Royal Playboys recently online - shame they are not to my taste style wise.

Sadly, I've put my Alden crepes away today, the autumn rains have set-in early and there's a distinct whiff on the end of October in the air. All rather depressing.

Re: Quality of Crepes

Well this thread prompted me to dig out the brown Sanders 'seconds' I picked up dirt cheap from East London years ago. Always thought they had a slightly too pointy toe and for one reason or another never got worn. Gave them another try as both pairs of Clarks gave up the ghost within the week and really can see why playboy boots are liked.

Pretty beefy shoes, and so with these canal barge feet of mine they're not going with 14" hem trousers, but very pleased I dug them out. They had a bloody hard sole though, but tried the old blow-dryer trick and they're perfect.

Having worn these, doubt I'll pick up a pair of the dark brown clarks again.

Thanks Captain! I'll be walking round feeling like a tall Steve McQueen all week now.

Blimey, just realised the new ones are about £190! You can get about half a new baracuta jacket for that kind of price....!

Re: Quality of Crepes

I'm still not sure if I'll ever go back to the Sanders Colin myself...

Yup - it's that shape of the pointy toe for me too....PLUS... I just don't find them very comfy at all?!?

I did give some old Clark's Weavers a spin a few month's back...made a nice change...

Re: Quality of Crepes

Try hairdrying the sole for a good 10 minutes and a few days wear, Captain.

I like the look of the Classic Playboys - especially the leather ones, but fair play, there are some absolutely gopping shoes on there too.

Re: Quality of Crepes

The last looks a decent shape but I am not sure if these are any better than the RJ Colt, they might be but I er on the side of caution because the price would suggest they are not the best made/quality of shoe. It states the sole is Crepe, but it actually looks like a formed rubber especially with all the preform grooves plus what is going on with that odd double leather strip - faux strip foxing, the reason the foxing has a groove on some of the current versions is to replicate the leather bead of the originals, so to have both looks rather ugly and confusing to me.

The soles on the Chinese-made Clarks' I bought on Ebay are appalling.  Truly appalling.

Re: Quality of Crepes

Interesting. I’m sure i’m going against the grain. And hate to fly in the face of opinions of past posters on here who undoubtedly know more than me, but I have a pair of leather ‘Nam Clarks db’s that are sound. I’ve three pairs of MiE that haven’t seen half as much action and aren’t fairing nearly so well.
The soles are TOO soft. On a warm day they soften up more and pick up grit off the pavement, which makes an annoying scraping noise when they go onto a hard surface.
Having said that, I concede that the overall shape of the MiEs are better.
