"Well Dressed" Vs Appropriatetly Dressed ?

A universal online menswear forum topic:

- But let's give it an Ivy slant -

On the esteemed fora we have often seen those who will insist that even when popping out for a burger in the evening that they must wear Black Tie to "Partake" of an evening meal...  (Or "Repast") ...

- And we all recall the kid in the top hat that got his face caved in for such.

And so,

Ivy Where ?

Ivy How  ?

I look, frankly, gorgeous today in my Ivy rig. Yet not remotely appropriate for my nefarious dealings around Cheadle Hulme....  (I am a renowned international Poodle thief)

That I am well dressed, there can be no doubt. That I am appropriately dressed raises a huge and throbbing question mark.

And so -

Ivy Where  ?

Ivy How  ?

- Are you wise enough to censor your Ivy Peacock for some of your daily rounds ?

I enquire merely through interest.

Best -

Oh dear…. Manchester. Really? I can't picture you there. I certainly can't picture Ivy there. Depending on the direction of your dress the locals will either consider you a)a trendy (hipster in current argo) b) nerdy old man c) gay.  Take it from me - I speak from experience…

Re: "Well Dressed" Vs Appropriatetly Dressed ?

My sources inform me that the rejuvenation of Liverpool continues, which was in full-effect from my perspective from about 1994 onwards when you had a couple of decent jazz dance clubs, Bourbon Street and Heebiejeebies opening. Before then it was locked in depression and mired by images of The Boys From The Blackstuff and Brookside. My nephews inform me it's quite a hip place now.

I drove through Macclesfield on Friday, not much to see from the car, the usual Arighi Bianchi lorries on my way towards Chester.

MacArthur Glenn Cheshire Oaks Outlet Village remains a phenomenom that has killed-off Chester shopping completely. It was so busy in the Ralph Lauren store, they had a queue outside and were only letting people in two-at-a-time when people came out of the store.

The town of my birth seems strange to me now, even the old streets don't offer even a whiff of nostalga or the way I use to feel. I was glad to be on the road again Sunday morning and had a sigh of relief when I had got through the Eurotunnel on the Calais side, which was a bit premature, as it took me four hours to get home from there.

I might add, I did purchase a rather decent tweed sack jacket from the Ralph Lauren store, excellent quality and fit in a 42R for 119 quid. Well worth it. Also a couple of ties, one repp, the other with some fantasy old school emblems, for 19 quid each. Again, good buys.

To actually answer Jims question, I think there is a lot more well than appropriate dressing on this board- gunboats for instance,  I wore my Brown Bostonians today with long mac, Shetland,  ocbd and wool slacks,  whereas judging by most pictures I've seen loafers or split toes might have been more appropriate?

Your comment reflects one of the sad aspects of life Hep, nowhere is ever the same when you go back after a long absence. Places change, people change, there's a feeling that everyone's moved on to different things. I expect it's the same with internet forums.

My last post soundsat the like I'm having a dig at the other posters but it's not meant that way. I do think this board has in some ways created its own interpretation(s) of 'the look', sometimes reflecting particular posters and groups of posters ideas and tastes, that's not always a bad thing?

I appreciate the diversity of Ivy in that it ranges from casual informality to formal smartness.  The look adapts to the situation, hopefully unseen but distinctive, a touch too smart for our era but not obviously or inappropriately so.

- Back on track, Pop Pickers -

Do you moderate your "Ivy" to suit the daily gig ?

Yes I absolutely do.   No point sitting around in formal gear at home.  I wouldn't present to a conference in chinos and camp mocs (well not the formal ones).   Wearing thick tweed and wool jumpers in hotter climates doesn't work and so on.   The wardrobe selection of the time suits the situation.    I've just returned from SA and wouldn't need most of my wardrobe there but living in UK with its diversity of weather, I thankfully do.   Today alone we have had summer and heavy rain causing an evolution through the day.

There are constants though with a few examples for me being ties always knitted, shirts always button down, trousers always flat front, jackets preferably unstructured and patch pocket.

Ivy scales down well. If it's too casual for Brooks Brothers, there's L.L. Bean. If it's too urban for a rural L.L. Bean look, there's Tom Wolfe style "Funky Chic". If you find yourself still overdressed in Dickies and a shirt-jac, there are still options. smile

I always dress appropriately, always.

In that, I wear whatever the fuck I want, because they're my clothes, motherfucker! Who's gonna tell me different?

Thank you.
