Re: On Taste...

I was considering starting another thread on philosophy, but this ones seems to be close enough in substance to perpetuate. I am reading what seems to be by consensus the magnum opus of Theodore Adorno, Aesthetic Theory, and it got me pondering, which I suppose is the point.

I have always wondered how much people think about their deeply held convictions of the "rules". Seems that not many people ask why they identify so strongly with it. I guess the flip side, and a sizable contingent, are the wonders who pseudo-philosophize the whole thing, and have no practical touchstone.

My deepest current conundrum is whether I like stick pins or tie tacks better.

Once you leave the UK for good, all that class stuff seems so parochial and archaic.

Doesn't it just.

I think if you swapped "mines and shipyards" for a winning lotto ticket and a 4 bedroom detached house with double garage you'd have a clear winner for the working class from round my way.

So worldly wise expat friends, are we saying that people on mainland Europe aren't interested in nice cars, or don't try to blend in with any particular grouping that is based on social aspiration?

Net curtains are great. They prevent chancers checking to see if you have anything worth nicking.

Re: On Taste...

Oh GROAN!!!  Vanity plates.

Vanity plates = NO taste

I see so many vanity plates around my neck of the woods.  Usually attached to an expensive car, or at least a car that has a lot of other accessories stuck on it, or a jacked up truck.  If it's a female driver she's texting and if it's a male driver he's likely smoking and wearing a huge ostentatious watch.  Gag me.
