Re: 1970 AM Radio Rock Bands

I see McDonald went on to join the Doobie Brothers...I thought he may have founded them but he was taken on after 1975...which might explain why I quite like their later stuff more.. anyway with the crossover of a few musicans between the Doobies and Steely Dan I can really get into both of them, Minute by Minute sounds great to me.

Re: 1970 AM Radio Rock Bands

I thought that I hated the 70s except some soul and funk, a few glam and disco things, some pub rockers and teeny boppers, and a bit of early punk rock/ proto punk. Now that I check these lists, I see that there were a lot of good songs.

Even on you shit lists, Stan, I can find a few things that I like, such as "Seasons In The Sun" by Terry Jacks. I also like Neil Diamond and The Carpenters. MOR guilty pleasures. Probably childhood memories, nostalgia of some sort.

However, I can't stand the Eagles, Steely Dan, Chicago, Pink Floyd, Yes, Genesis, ELP, Jethro Tull and stuff like that...

Re: 1970 AM Radio Rock Bands

While we're at it, what about Billy Joel? Some real radio friendly stuff in the 70s and quite a few of my mates dads had styled themselves on him. That was just before The BeeGees blonde bouffant look.

I have a photo of my old man from '75 and he looks like a member of The Band. No flares, black leather jacket and black crew neck and blackish jeans.

And who can forget "Love's Theme" by Barry White and the Love Unlimited Orchestra. Also known as the "CBS Golf Theme."

The Modern Lovers - Road Runner & The New York Dolls - Personality Crisis

Uh, no, just kidding. To think that I spent so much energy running away from AM drivel in the 70s... only to be reminded of it so many years later.

Seriously, at the time, anything that was the least bit popular was, to my mind, worthless. Aside from a few exceptions, e.g., the Stones, Steely Dan, and Sly.

Re: 1970 AM Radio Rock Bands

Still think post-punk and new wave in the UK was a much better music scene, the period from '77-85 was a golden era in British popular music. That also happened to be the time that the distance between the US and UK charts was a bigger gulf that it is today, or before. What happened?

Re: 1970 AM Radio Rock Bands

/\  safe to say that most cool cats here don't prefer early '70s AM hits from the Hot 100 to top-notch album rock or electric Miles or dread roots reggae etc. but that wasn't the question .........................................................

Re: 1970 AM Radio Rock Bands

Now, electric Miles... I was actually diggin' that stuff back then. Not many of us were, but I thought On The Corner, Bitches Brew, and Big Fun were way cool. (I don't think electric Miles ever made it to AM, though. har har)

Whoa. That's Steve Miller? I had no idea he was that... I'm not sure bizarre is the word I'm looking for.

Re: 1970 AM Radio Rock Bands

There's so much Miles. I wasn't aware of Filles back then either. The record store seemed to be hawking the crazier electric stuff I mentioned, probably just because it was, for the time, so out there.
